2. Critically assess the effectiveness of the Rizal course
3. Discus the ancestry of Dr. Jose Rizal
Jose P. Rizal is considered by most of us as our national hero. He dedicated his life in seeking
justice and reforms in his motherland, the Philippines. We need to understand the legal
foundations of the Rizal course to enable us to appreciate the needs of studying the life and
works of Rizal to foster patriotism and nationalism among us the present generation of our
country.

IV. Introduction:
Welcome to the study of RIZAL Life and Works! The team of instructors/professors is excited to
have you in class and looks forward to having a fruitful semester with you.
First, we recommend that you take a few minutes to explore the course as shown in the syllabus.
(Refer to Syllabus Page on the canvas). It presents the topics, delivery mode, and references for
each schedule/week. In addition, class rules and policies are also posted for guidance.
The course RIZAL covers the life and works of the Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal as
mandated by Republic Act 1425. Topics covered are Rizal’s biography and writings particularly
the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, some of his essays and various
correspondences.
V. Body:
As an introductory lesson, the main topic is about RA 1425 or the Rizal Law and Rizal’s
Ancestry. This includes the following sub-topics:
Senate Bill 438- An act to make Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo compulsary
reading material in all public and private colleges and universities.
Recto and Laurel Version of the Rizal Law- Recto’s Argument “Rizal inculcated civic
consciousness among Filipinos, national dignity, patriotism and personal pride”.
Laurel’s Explanation “Compulsion was removed in the subtitle of the bill.
Reading of unexpurgated or original form is required”
The Standpoint of Anti- Rizal bill- Sen. Decoroso Rosales, Sen. Mariano Cuenco and
Francisco “Soc” Rodrigo “Argued that it will be a violation of religious freedom”.
Fr. Jesus Cavanna’s stand, “The novel was not patriotic because out of 333 pages
only 25 contained patriotic passages while 120 pages were devoted to Anti-
Catholic attacks”.
Rizal’s Family tree. Paternal and maternal side. Rizal’s Parents – Don Francisco Mercado
and Teodora Alonzo. Rizal’s siblings- Saturnina, Paciano, Narcisa, Olimpia,
Lucia, Maria, Concepcion, Josefa, Trinidad and Soledad.

VII. Summary and Conclusion
The RA 1425 was signed in to Law to form part in the curricula of private and public schools in
the Philippines. This statute was provided to inculcate the civic consciousness and to foster
nationalism and patriotism to the youth. Rizal’s family palyed a significant role in the the
development of young Rizal. The concept of injustice, and sufferings of Filipinos were known by
Rizal in his young age as a result of the events happened to his family in his young age.
