General Statement: Students need English tutors.

Thesis Statement: Senior high school students with frustration reading levels must undergo
English tutoring services to improve English proficiency.

I. Argument 1: Tutoring has numerous benefits for students.

A. Support 1: Students will be provided with one-on-one attention. Their
educational status and studying habits will be taken into consideration.

B. Support 2: English instructors are more responsible for learning and building
the student’s store of linguistic knowledge.

Palermo, 2020)
C. Support 3: Tutorials are regarded as a necessary instructional strategy for
students because they aid those who are academically challenged.

II. Argument 2: Teachers face problems in teaching that can be avoided by tutors.
A. Support 1: Engaging a large number of students in learning is very difficult for
teachers.

Language
B. Support 2: Teachers struggles with not having enough time for lecture to
teach.

C. Support 3: Limited teaching resources

III. Argument 3: Most senior high school students lack English proficiency.
A. Support 1: Senior high school students are very poor in written English.

Poor in English
B. Support 2: PISA assessment test results showed that the Philippines scored
340 in reading or below average.

C. Support 3:The Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) recently
published a report that reveals senior high school students “can
barely write in English”.

suggests most 'can barely write in English'
(Indention: .05) (Alignment: Justified)
According to Corpuz & Jacinto (2022), the school’s diagnostic test in reading
comprehension administered to Grade 11 GAS learners displayed 32% of the frustration
level in reading proficiency. This result is deemed alarming since it is expected for senior
high school learners to be instructional readers, if not independent.” Moreover, English is
considered as the universal language and as an official language in a total of 67 countries
including the Philippines where approximately 14 million Filipinos speak English as their
second language. Moreover, English is the medium of instruction for the majority of the
subjects in our curriculum. This suggests that the language holds a significant role in the
academic performance of the students. And one solution that I can suggest is that students
need English tutors. Therefore, senior high school students with frustration reading levels
must undergo English tutorials to improve their English proficiency.

In addition, tutoring has numerous benefits for students such as tutoring provides
one-on-one attention to students when private tutors adapt teaching methods accordingly.
With this, the student’s educational status as well as their unique studying habits will be
taken into consideration and they can ensure that their progress is closely monitored.
Secondly, English instructors are more responsible for learning and building the student’s
store of linguistic knowledge because tutors have a tendency to be strict with continuous
practice of the English language through answering worksheets and solid guidance from a
certified Instructor. And thirdly, one of the advantages of having an English tutor is that
tutorials are regarded as a necessary instructional strategy for students because they aid
those who are academically challenged. As mentioned before, this solution can be seen as
effective especially for those with frustration reading levels. By doing this, the problem will be
addressed and the students can be encouraged to give importance to the English language
and participate in academic activities as opposed to neglecting the language solely because
they currently perform poorly.

Furthermore, having an English tutor will be more beneficial because in a regular

school setting, teachers face problems in teaching that can be avoided by tutors. To state a
few, teachers find it difficult when engaging with a large number of students in learning. And
as we all know, a room full of students causes disturbance and distractions not only to the
teachers but to the student’s learning. And when this kind of situation happens on a daily
basis, even when the teacher tries to manage the class, the students will struggle in keeping
up with the discussion. This can be observed in lower sections where most of the students
are in the area of concern. And aside from this, teachers struggle with not having enough
time for lectures to teach. Having a limited amount of time and a full schedule with more
students to teach, teachers can get behind on their lesson plan. And this can resort to
students having to self-study and use supplemental learning materials online. And as a
student, I detest having to learn the module myself because it only means that my leisure
time will be reduced. That is why some of us procrastinate or delay our studying. And lastly,
teachers deal with limited teaching resources especially, in public schools. Sometimes, when
we have to read articles or a story, it almost all happens online because of the insufficient
learning materials in our school library.

Moreover, most senior high school students lack English proficiency. Perhaps you
know a high school student or even a senior high student who finds it difficult to construct a
simple English sentence. And this is evident and backed up by studies. Based on PISA
assessment test results showed that the Philippines scored 340 in reading or below average.
This is very alarming because we use reading in a lot of human activities, namely following
an instruction manual, knowing the what, who, where, and why of an event and we use
reading in written communication. And according to research conducted by the Philippine
Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), our senior high school students are very poor in
written English. This includes all reports and written outputs such as essays. Additionally,
this study reveals that senior high school students “can barely write in English.”

However, some people might argue that tutorial services is just an added cost to an
already expensive living. And yes, you would be paying additional but your money will be put
to the betterment of the education of your children. And to address this, it would be
recommended if the students can find at least two more students to be with for the tutorial.
Consequently, the hourly charges will be lowered with the regular 100-200 PhP an hour on
average.

In conclusion, we should give importance and attention to improving the English

proficiency of the senior high school students, especially those with frustration reading
levels. And one of the effective solutions is by conducting academic interventions like
English tutorials. Wherein tutorials have many benefits to students. In a regular school
setting, tutorials can also avoid problems faced by teachers. And with the lack of English
proficiency of some students, tutorials will bridge the gap between students in academic
performance. While parents might argue that tutorials is just an extra expense, in my
opinion, given all of its provided advantages, it definitely outweighs the price that you have to
pay. And by the word of Benjamin Franklin, always remember, that an investment in
knowledge always pays the best return.
