AP Chemistry Course Syllabus

Spring 2023
Instructor: Dr. BQ Wang
drbqwang@gmail.com; WeChat: drbqwang
Time and Location:
Saturdays TBD
Sundays 5-7 pm. (No class on Feb 18/19 and Apr 1/2)

Course Description
This course is designed to prepare students for the Chemistry Advanced Placement
exam. AP Chemistry involves numerical problem solving and word problem analysis
both in the content and the laboratory. We will provide students a solid foundation of
knowledge on which to rationalize, summarize and predict the structure and properties
of materials that make up chemistry.
Specific Objectives
 To foster scientific habits of mind and body, including objectivity, curiosity, and
inventiveness.
 To understand the fundamental concepts and principles of chemistry through the
investigation of chemical phenomena, theories and experimental methods.
 To develop problem solving skills and mathematical reasoning.
 To understand the connections chemistry has to society, culture, technology and
other sciences.

Course Materials
Text: We will use our own reviewing materials and the book “Barron's AP chemistry” by
Neil D Jespersen for homework assignments. A recommended book for self-study and
reference, but optional, is Chemistry: The Central Science (13th Ed. by Theodore E.
Brown).
Homework: We will use Canvas for online homework assignments. Students should
finish the practice questions and correct the mistakes at home. Homework questions
with common mistakes will be explained in class.
