Parties and Speeches

PERFORMANCE STANDARD: The learner skillfully delivers a speech for a special occasion through utilizing effective verbal
and non-verbal strategies and ICT resources.

GOAL: Your task is to deliver a roast speech for a friend who is moving to another country.

ROLES: You and your groupmates are friends with someone who is going to live abroad. You decided to host a send-off party
for him or her. You thought that each of you should give a roast speech to him or her while one of you will be the roastmaster.
AUDIENCE: Your audience is composed of the people who will attend the send-off party. This would include classmates and
close friends of the roastee.
SITUATION: You and your friends plan to give a send-off party for a friend who will migrate to another country. Instead of
making it an awkward and sad situation, you thought of livening it up by including roast speeches that will be delivered by
some of the roastee’s closest friends.

PRODUCT CHOICES:
1. Form a group of five.
2. Assign one of the members to be the roastmaster, while the other four will be delivering a roast speech.
3. Construct a program for the event.
4. Write the roast speeches.
5. Role play the program and speeches in front of the class.
6. Print out a copy of the program and speeches on short bond paper. Use Arial font size 12.
STANDARDS: Your project will be graded using the rubric below.

PERFORMANCE TASK ANALYTIC RUBRIC TEMPLATE

 Criteria Beginning (0-12 points)
Content The content of the speech
is dull and includes very
minimal information about
the roastee.
Organization Ideas are difficult to follow
due to lack of coherence
and consistency.
Language There are five or more
errors in spelling,
grammar, mechanics, and
language use.
Punctuality The role play was not
performed at all. The
script was not submitted.
Cooperation and Two or more persons in
Teamwork the group did not do well
in the role play.
Developing (13-16 points)
The content of the speech is
entertaining but can still be
improved. Some parts are
irrelevant to the roastee.
There is a smooth flow of
ideas during the speech.
However, some parts of the
script veer away from the
purpose of the roast speech.
There are one to four errors
in spelling, grammar,
mechanics, and language
use.
The role play was performed
and the script was submitted
a day after the given
deadline.
One person in the group did
not do well in the role play.
Accomplished (17-20 points) Score
The content of the speech is
entertaining and is clearly
related to the roastee.
There is a smooth flow of
ideas during the speech. The
script is logical and easy to
follow.
There are no errors in spelling,
grammar, mechanics, and
language use.
The role play was performed
and the script was submitted
on the given deadline.
Everyone in the group did well
in the role play and
accomplished his or her tasks
well.
