Solving Problems Involving Functions

The learner solves problems involving functions. (M11GM-Ia-4)

 Problem solving plays a very important role in mathematics learning. It helps the learners
think critically. The teacher becomes the facilitator and helps the students construct a better
understanding of mathematical ideas and the process involved in doing the tasks.
 As suggested by George Polya, problem solving follows a simple set of steps or guide stated
below:
1. Understand the problem. 3. Carry out the plan.
2. Devise a plan. 4. Look back.
 Problem solving involves translation of word statements into mathematical expressions or
equations.
DIRECTIONS: Investigate the given situations and answer the questions that follow.

I. My Favorite Things
You went to your favorite school supplies store and used your ₱ 50-0ff coupon. Then, you went
to your favorite shoe store ad used your 20%-off coupon.
Question:
1. How many functions can you make out of the situations?
2. What are these functions?
3. What is the function for the total amount you spent given that you bought items that regularly cost
₱200 at each store?
4. What if you have two coupons for your favorite clothing store: one that is 30% discount and
another one that is ₱60 off. If the store allows you to use both coupons in any order, which do you
think gives you the better deal if the shirt you want to buy costs ₱500?

II. How Old Will They Be?

Mary who is 54 years old has a niece, Abbie, who is 18 years old. In how many years will
2
Abbie’s age be of her aunt’s age?
5
Questions:

1. How are you going to begin solving the problem?

2. How will you represent the required number of years?
3. What will be your strategy to solve this problem?
4. How are you going to represent the present ages?
5. How are you going to represent their ages from now?

III. How Much Commission is in Store for Me?

You work forty-eight hour a week at a furniture store. You received a ₱1,800 weekly salary,
plus a 2% commission on sales over ₱50,000.00. Assume that you sell enough this week to get the
commission.

1. Given f ( x )=x −50,000 and g ( x )=2.02 ( x ), which of f ( g ( x ) ) and g ( f ( x ) ) represents your

commission?
2. With the help of the commission function, how much will you receive after one week if the total
sale is ₱100,00?
3. How much will you receive after a week if the total sale is ₱350,000?
