Activity Sheet
The learner determines the inverse of a one-to-one function. (M11GM-Id-2)
The Learner represents an inverse function through its: (a) table of values, and (b) graph.
(M11GM-Id-3)

 If f is a one-to-one function satisfying y=f (x ), then there is a function f −1, called the
inverse of f , such that its set consists of the ordered pairs x=f ( y ) defined by
−1
x=f ( y ) if and only if y=f (x )

 Consequently, f −1 is the inverse of the function if and only if

−1
f ( f ( y ) )=f ¿

 If f is a function consisting of ordered pairs ( x , y ) , then there is a relation called the

inverse of f denoted by f −1 whose elements are the ordered pairs ( y , x).
 The domain of f −1 is the range of f and the range of f −1 is the domain of f .
 The inverse of a function is not necessarily a function.

Steps in Solving for the Inverse of a Function

1. Express the function y as a function of x . y=f (x )
2. Interchange the variables. Substitute y=x , and x= y .
3. Solve for y in terms of x .
4. Write y=f −1 ( x ).
5. To verify if the inverse of the function is also one-to-one, solve for either f −1 ( f ( x ) ) or
f ( f −1 ( x ) ), it should follow that f ( f ( x ) )=¿ f ( f −1 ( x ) )=x
