EXPLORE
If you've ever found yourself
puzzled by peculiar phrases
that don't seem to make
sense, you've probably
entered the wonderful word of
idioms, where language takes
on a fun twist.

Idiomatic expressions are a

type of informal language that
have a meaning different from
the meaning of the words in
the expression.

Here are some examples of

an idiomatic expression:

Hold your tongue – To keep

quiet

Pull yourself together - To

calm down

Go the extra mile – To do

something more than what is
necessary.
Go down in flames – To end
baldy

Old School – Something from

a long time ago

Why idioms are used?

Idioms are used in order

to add variety and color
to speech or writing.
They can also be used
to emphasize a point, or
to make a statement
more memorable.

Example:
1. John's decision to quit his
job was like a breath of fresh
air, giving him the chance to
spread his wings and
pursue his passion.

The idiom, "spread his

wings," emphasizes John's
newfound freedom and
opportunity for personal
growth, as if he were a bird
ready to explore beyond the
confines of his previous job.

2. "Despite facing numerous

challenges, Sarah always
keeps her chin up and sees
the silver lining in every
situation."

The idiom "keep her chin

up" emphasizes Sarah's
resilience and positive
attitude, suggesting that she
maintains her optimism even
in difficult circumstances.

3. "When the company faced

financial difficulties, the CEO
decided to tighten their belts
and cut unnecessary
expenses."

The idiom "tighten their

belts" emphasizes the need
for the company to be more
frugal and economically
cautious during tough times,
just like individuals might
tighten their belts to make
their clothing fit more snugly,
symbolizing a need to reduce
excess.
