It is a kind of needlework consisting of the interlocking of looped stitches formed with single thread and a hooked
needle.
It is a process of creating fabric from yarn, thread, or other material strands.
The word is derived from the French word "croche", meaning hook which has been used in the intricate process
of lace making.
Crochet differs from knitting in a way that only one stitch is active at one time, and a single crochet hook is used
instead of two knitting needles.
Tools and Materials used in Crocheting
1. Crochet hooks – are made either by wood, bone, plastic, steel and aluminum.
2. Crochet thread or yarn – comes in variety of natural or man-made fibers. Each has its own characteristics and
they differ from one another in tactile, tenacity, and weight.
Kinds:
A. Cotton thread has a very smooth, silky finish and usually used for crocheting. Sometimes it has matte
appearance like some bedspread cottons.
B. Linen thread – ideal for summer blouse.
C. Wool yarn – is suitable for blankets, baby garments, sweater and other fashion items.
Types of Crochet
1. Amigurumi Crochet
- This is a crochet art form that originated in Japan and it refers to the making of small, stuffed toys or creatures made from

knitted or crocheted yarn. Ami means crochet or knit and nuigurumi means stuffed doll. If you ever see a little doll or toy made
from yarn, that’s amigurumi. Hello Kitty, Plants VS Zombies and Mario Kart are popular themes for amigurumi.
2. Aran Crochet
- Refers to ribbed or cabled crochet. It’s traditionally a Celtic style crochet with interlocking cables and can be used to make
chunky beanies, sweaters and scarves. Aran is also a weight of yarn so be weary of that when you read the word ‘aran’ in a
pattern. When you see a picture of someone snuggled under a big, cosy looking blanket –
that’s aran.

3. Bullion Crochet
This is a specialized crochet stitch achieved with a combination of multiple wraps of yarn around a very long hook, forming a
distinctive and unique ‘roll’ stitch. Bullion crochet is usually used for motifs rather than fabric based projects. It results in a
thick, uniform, round motif style piece.
– Stiff items like place mats
– Motifs for decoration
4. Clothesline Crochet
This is a style of crochet where traditional stitches are worked over a thick rope or clothesline style length of thick twine to

make circular mats and baskets that hold their shape. This is often seen as a trial technique and can be traced back to
craftspeople in Nepal and Africa.

5. Micro Crochet
This is a modern style of crochet and it’s achieved using very fine thread and extremely fine crochet hooks. This is very delicate
work and probably best for more patient crocheters.
Crochet is basically an interlocking of loops. Loops of uniform tensions are produced when hook is held
correctly in one hand while the thread is kept in tension in the other hand.
Notice that you may hold the hook in either two ways: (1) as if it is a knife or (2) as if it were a pencil. You may
use whichever method is comfortable for you. It is also important to remember that hook shall be facing down, with
your thumb and index finger on the flat part of the hook. Your middle finger should be resting against your thumb.
1. CHAIN STITCH
The chain stitch is considered as the foundation or the base of the most crochet stitches and patterns.
Therefore, chain stitch should be the first to master.
The half double crochet is distinguished by a pronounced ridge in its texture. It is slightly taller than the single
crochet and is used to create a firm, attractive fabric. This stitch is the first of the basic stitches that requires a yarn
over before you insert the hook. Again, be sure the front side of the foundation chain is facing you.
E. Developing mastery The teacher will show a video of the basic stitches used in crocheting. Allow the students to write their answers in a
EXPLAIN piece of paper requested by the teacher and ask them to keep it for a while.
