objectives and
scope The goal of the IEC 61850 standard
■ Interoperability
– Exchange information between IED’s (Intelligent Electronic
Device) from several manufacturers
– Use this information for the own function
■ Free Configuration
– Free allocation of functions to devices
– Support any philosophy of our customer – centralized or
decentralized systems
■ Long Term Stability
– Future proof
– Follow progress in mainstream communication technology
– Follow evolving system requirements needed by our customers

IEC 61850 and UCA
■ UCA (Utility Communications Architecture) was an
initiative managed by EPRI
– ICCP, now standardized as TASE.2 (IEC 60870-6) was a first
project from UCA
– UCA2.0 was a second project, targeting the substation
integrated protection, control and data acquisition
■ In 1998, UCA2.0 activities were stopped; the drafts
served as input to IEC 61850
– IEEE TR1550 contains the status of UCA2.0 as frozen in 1998
– Any further activities where done in IEC TC57
■ UCA users group became UCA international users
group
■ UCA international users group supports IEC 61850
– UCA2.0 is history; support of UCA2.0 is obsolete
