Welding instruction for axle brackets on steel – casted and fabricated axle housings

Remark: The following instruction is valid for weldings carried out by the customer.

1. consumables and auxiliary materials:

c) activ-gasmetal-arc welding (MAG, 135 nach ISO 857):
auxiliary materials: wire electrode d=1,2 (1,0)
EN ISO 14341 – A – G 4 Si 1
(for example: Oerlikon Carbofil 1a or Union K56)
protection gas: EN ISO 14175 – M 21
(for example: Linde Corgon 18)
mixture flow rate: 16 – 19 l/min
d) arc-welding (manual, 111 nach ISO 857):
auxiliary materials: coated stick electrode
EN ISO 2560 – A – E 50 6 B 4 2 H5
(for example: Oerlikon Tenacito 70)

2. welding preparation:
The welding area should be absolutely clean from paint, oil, grease, moisture and scale.
Weldment on top and bottom strap (plates) of housing reqiures preheatment to 150°C
minimum. Preheatmenttemperatures on area of side bar (plates) depend on thickness
and material quality of brackets to be welded.

3. welding sequence:
It should be applied the multi – layer technique in several flat beads. The allowable heat
input is 9-14 kJ/cm.

4. weld seam and thickness:

The welding execution depends on kind of stresses.
Important: The axle housing edges must not be melted. Beginning and end of weld
seam must have a distance of about 15 mm from axle housing edge. Ignition
points should not be out of the weld bead. The end crater must be filled up.

5. repair weldment:
In case of cracks, these should be removed by grinding or milling to the root weld.
Repair weldment should be done corresponding to the above points 1 – 4.
