PTCC Communications Ports Setup

RS-232 Ports
PTCC Communications Ports

The CAPM4/5 in the Pole Top Control

Cubicle has two ports P8 and P9 which
can be connected to RS232 devices for
serial data communications.

● P8 can run at up to 19200 baud on a

CAPM5 and 9600 baud on a CAPM4 and
always operates as a remote port.

● P9 can run at up to 19200 baud on a

CAPM5 or CAPM4 and can be configured
to operate as a remote or local port.
(defaults to local)

P9 normally a local port

P8 always a remote port

2
PTCC Communications Ports Options
● P9 is normally operated as a LOCAL
SCADA
WSOS port for running WSOS in Direct
Connect mode.

● P8 is always a REMOTE port and is

normally used to run a
communications protocol (DNP3,
MODBUS etc) to integrate the
controller into a SCADA scheme.

● P8 can also be used to run WSOS

where it is used to control the ACR
remotely.

● Where P8 is not available for remote

WSOS WSOS, P9 can be configured as a
REMOTE port and used for this
purpose.

3
Running WSOS on Port P8

Controllers with a communications

WSOS protocol imbedded in their
firmware have this protocol
running on Port P8 by default.

4
Running WSOS on Port P8

Controllers with a communications

protocol imbedded in their
firmware have this protocol
running on Port P8 by default.

● The protocol must be selected

OFF on P8 if this port is required
to run WSOS.

● P8 must be configured for:

-Baud rate
-Change of State ON/OFF
-Dial up number
When used for WSOS
communications.

Remote WSOS Setup in WSOS

6
Running WSOS Remotely on P9
When P8 is being used for SCADA
SCADA comms, P9 can be used to
communicate remotely via WSOS.

● To enable P9 to be used for remote

WSOS comms it is configurable in
terms of Baud Rate and Mode.

● Firstly P9 must be made available via

WSOS.

7
Configuring P9 for Remote WSOS
When P8 is being used for SCADA
comms, P9 can be used to
communicate remotely via WSOS.

● To enable P9 to be used for remote

WSOS comms it is configurable in
terms of Baud Rate and Mode.

● Firstly P9 must be made available via

WSOS.

● Once Configurable P9 has been

made Available in WSOS, P9 can be
configured from the panel as well as
WSOS.

8
Using P9 for Local and Remote WSOS
Even when P9 is used for remote
SCADA WSOS it may be needed for local
WSOS at times as well.

● In this case WSOS comms should be

set up for
Automatic Baud Rate Selection

9
Additional RS-232 Port P8b
RS-232 ports P8 and P9 have DB25
connectors on the CAPM.

● Port P8 uses eight pins in this

connector:
- Pin 1 0V (chassis ground)
- Pin 2 Tx Data
- Pin 3 Rx Data
- Pin 4 RTS
- Pin 5 CTS
- Pin 7 0V (signal ground)
- Pin 8 DCD
- Pin 20 DTR

● Port P9 only uses Tx, Rx and ground.

● An additional RS-232 port P8b can be

accessed through the P8 connector.

GSM Modems
Installing a mobile phone with the
switchgear avoids the need to connect
a permanent phone line to the site and
is thus often the most cost effective
communications option.

● GSM modems use a SIM card the

same as a mobile telephone but it
must be activated for data calls by
your local network provider before they
can be used.

● GSM modems need to be configured

with the correct baud rate for the local
network provider before they can be
used. If this is known they can be pre-
configured by the modem
manufacturer before arrival!

Summary

The PTCC has two RS232 ports, (P9) on

the front panel normally used for local
WSOS communications, and (P8) which is
used for remote SCADA or WSOS
communications.

● P8 must be deselected for remote SCADA

if it is to be used for remote WSOS.

● P8 must be configured separately when

used for remote WSOS communications.

● P9 can be configured as a Local or

Remote port and the baud rate is
selectable.
