PCA-Ethical Communities Worksheet

Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the four ethical communities
2. Apply the ethical communities to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

In 2022 Daikin merged with Goodman to expand business in North America. The

business units struggled with aligning with direction and process outlined to

complete projects. The Goodman business unit did not prioritize the value in training

and did not follow Daikin standards for training development. As the Senior

Instructional Developer my role is to develop, implement, and manage technical

training materials for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) products.

2) Describe how the ethics of the organization influenced the situation.

Project managers can find themselves in ethical dilemmas often as they work with

multiple people in various positions. This variety can lead to persuasion to align with

others who have different points of view than the original objective. I must constantly

combat these situations as I deal with sales and technical services. Sales tend to

push the products to launch before it is fully prepared which end up good for them

but bad for tech services because they now must repair and warranty more products

in the field” (Bolman &Deal, 1994). When a good decision needs to be technically

sound, the structural frame’s empisis on data and logic is essitial.” At times, it can

1
feel like we have to cater to everyone involved. This dilemma makes it difficult to

prioritize where the direction should be received from.

3) Recommend how you would apply one of the ethical communities for an alternative
course of action regarding your case.

The leaders in the business unit that was acquired were not in support of the

projects that were being developed. Because of this, they were attempting to place

staff from their department into the development team to further disrupt and delay

the project. Because of this placement of opposing members, the acquiring business

unit had taken the time to realign the organization. This required them to restate the

company mission and stress the importance of training the acquired business so that

they better understood the objectives and provided support for the newly organized

team to move forward.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about ethics.

As someone who has worked on many projects, I understand the significance of

ethics in project management. Ethics is crucial to project management because it

sets boundaries and promotes accountability and transparency. Ethics helps ensure

everyone is treated fairly and that everyone adheres to the same rules and

expectations. I constantly push that ethical standards are met throughout the life

cycle of a project which leads to better communication, high performance within a

team, and in the end, a better product. By setting clear ethical standards, everyone

involved in the project is working toward the same goals, this upfront agreement

creates a sense of unity and shared responsibility for the project. Overall, practicing

2
good ethics brings a positive outcome to any project and helps maintain the

reputation of a team and company.
