the skin, with whitest and translucent in appearance, having a pinkish color
of the nail bed.

Diagram of the Nail Structures

Structures Beneath the Nail

The following are the structures beneath the nail which includes the
nail bed, matrix and lunula.

 Nail Bed – a skin where the nail body or nail plate rests. It is
supplied with many blood vessels and nerves. The blood
vessels supply nourishment for the nail.
 Matrix – is a part of the nail bed that includes the nerves and
blood vessels which is located beneath the nail root. This can
produce cells that can generate and harden the nail which
will continue to grow in a healthy condition as it receives
nutrition.

 Lunula – is the half-moon shape found at the base part of the

nail in which the matrix is being connected with the nail bed.

Structures Surrounding the Nail

The structures surrounding the nail include the cuticle,

eponychium, hyponychium, nail walls, nail grooves and mantle.

 Cuticle - the overlapping skin around the nail. A normal

cuticle should be loose and pliable.

 Eponychium - is the cuticle extension found at the base of

the nail body and partly overlaps with the lunula.

 Hyponychium – portion of the skin under the free edge of the

nail.

 Nail Walls – are the folds of skin that overlaps on the sides of
the nail

 Nail Grooves – are the slits or tracks of the skin found at the
side of the nail where the nail moves as it grows.

 Mantle – is the deep fold on the skin where the nail root is
embedded.

The characteristics of a healthy nail includes the following, nails must be firm
