Module outline This module is designed to develop an understanding of the fundamental concept
of Cloud Computing, cloud segments, and cloud deployment models, the need for
Cloud Computing, an appreciation of issues associated with managing cloud
service architecture and to develop a critical awareness of Cloud Computing-
based projects.

The main aim of this module is to provide you with the opportunity to master the
basic knowledge of cloud computing technology and develop a clear
understanding of cloud computing as part of the journey towards enterprise cloud
computing engineers.

The module will enable you to understand the concept, architecture, and services
of Cloud Computing through hands-on experience of configuring a cloud services
from AWS provider. We will also examine the AWS Global Infrastructure to gain a
clear understanding of what the infrastructure includes, and understand the
differences between AWS Regions, Availability Zones, and Edge Locations.
Finally, it will also serve to provide you with a progression path to becoming an
AWS cloud development specialist.

Indicative  The cloud and how it works.

content
 Cloud computing and deployment models.

 The AWS Cloud value proposition.

 The basic global infrastructure of the cloud.

 Different methods of interacting with AWS.

 AWS service domains.

 AWS Cloud services.

 The Well-Architected Framework.

 Basic AWS Cloud architectural principles.

 The Shared Responsibility model.

 Security services and the AWS cloud.

 Billing, account management, and pricing models for the AWS platform.

 Future services and developments built on the cloud.

Learning On successful completion of this module you will be expected to be able to:
outcomes
1. Assess the deployment models, service models and technological drivers of
Cloud Computing and validate their use.

2. Produce a design and Cloud Computing solution using service provider’s

framework and tools.

3. Analyse the technical challenges for cloud applications and assess their
risks.

4. Apply an understanding of the fundamentals of Cloud Computing and its

architectures.

Learning and This module will be delivered through a combination of learning and teaching
teaching methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials and self-directed learning
strategy exercises. You will be supported to reflect on your practical development of skills
and issues that will support successful study and career development. Practical
seminars will focus on the development of the skills for study and industry, and the
relationship with personal tutors and peers will be utilised to help development and
reflection. Tutorials and workshops will give feedback and guidance on progress.
The module is supported by a VLE site containing additional learning and support
materials and interactive content, including forums.

Formative Formative assessment is employed to support your learning on the module,
assessment allowing you to reflect on feedback on your progress from your tutors and peers. It
strategy takes a variety of forms such as classroom discussions, activities and tasks and
does not contribute to the final module mark. With regards to the component 2
examination, this will be supported with a mock examination to help student
prepare for the summative assessment.

Summative The summative assessment strategy is designed to enable you to meet the
assessment learning outcomes through two methods of assessment.
strategy
The first assessment is a combination of written and practical work that will
culminate in a portfolio of evidence that will include:

 Written work showcasing an understanding of fundamentals of cloud

computing services.
 Design, produce and demonstrate a solution to a given problem.
 Testing and Troubleshooting work carried out and documented.
 Written analysis of relevance to industry.

The second part is the examination which will test students overall understanding
of cloud fundamental concepts.

The module will be assessed by two components:

Component 1 - Portfolio combining written and practical lab work - 75%

Component 2 - Exam - 25%

The VLE will be used for secure electronic submission of coursework and for
equally secure return of marked work and feedback.
