"FIRE FROM SODIUM PERMANGANATE AND GLUCOSE

REACTION"

1. ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment is to explain the reaction that occurs when sodium
permanganate and glucose in the form of sugar are mixed together and how it can lead to the
appearance of fire.
The project will outline the hypothesis, materials, procedure, and expected results of
the experiment.

2. HYPOTHESIS

When sodium permanganate and glucose are mixed together, a redox reaction occurs that
generates heat. This heat can cause the glucose to combust, resulting in the appearance of
fire.

3. MATERIALS NEEDED FOR THE EXPERIMENT

- Sodium permanganate
- Sugar
- Mortar and pestle (almofariz e pilão)
- Heat source (e.g. Bunsen burner)
- Beaker
- Safety goggles

4. PROCEDURE

1. Put a small amount of sodium permanganate into a glass beaker.

2. Crush the glucose into a fine powder using a mortar and pestle.
3. Add the powdered glucose to the beaker containing the sodium permanganate.
4. Heat the mixture using a Bunsen burner or other heat source.
5. Observe the reaction that occurs

5. RESULT
When heat is applied to the mixture of sodium permanganate and glucose, a redox reaction
takes place. The permanganate ion (MnO4-) acts as an oxidizing agent, which oxidizes the
glucose molecule. This results in the production of carbon dioxide, water, and manganese
dioxide. The reaction is exothermic, which means it releases heat as a byproduct. If enough
heat is generated, it can cause the glucose to combust, leading to the appearance of fire.

6. CONCLUSION
The reaction between sodium permanganate and glucose is an example of a redox reaction,
where the permanganate ion acts as an oxidizing agent and oxidizes the glucose molecule.
The reaction generates heat, which can cause the glucose to combust, resulting in the
appearance of fire. However, it is important to note that this experiment is extremely
dangerous and should not be attempted due to the risk of fire and injury. Safety should
always be the top priority in any science experiment or project.
