Topic: A research on effects of overthinking on IBD students
Chapter I. Introduction
1.1. Background
Positive energy brings impressive achievement, which is able to help people
be more productive and creative. However, the number of IBD students who have
too much negative thinking, and this tendency significantly affects their lives.
Overthinking is a common problem that affects many people and can be defined as
a process of constantly analyzing and scrutinizing a situation beyond what is
necessary or productive. While some degree of reflection and analysis is healthy,
overthinking can lead to a range of negative outcomes, including increased stress,
anxiety, and indecision. In this research, we will explore the causes and effects of
overthinking, as well as some strategies for coping with and reducing it.
1.2. Rationale
Modern life has become increasingly busy, with people working more and
facing more challenges in their daily lives. As a result, mental health issues are
becoming more common, particularly among young people aged 18-24. One
common issue is overthinking, which is on the rise in the IBD student community.
This is an important topic for IBD students to understand.
Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Institute of Applied Medicine of
Vietnam, explains that overthinking is not a mental illness, but it can be a symptom
of an underlying mental health problem. Over time, it can also weaken the immune
system. When someone is worried or stressed, the body's stress response is
triggered, which can create substances like cortisol that weaken the immune
system. (Toàn, 2023)
5
Despite the negative effects of overthinking, it is not receiving enough
attention from young IBD students. Additionally, research on the mental health and
overthinking of IBD students is limited. This study aims to address these
limitations by evaluating the level of anxiety and identifying the reasons behind
excessive negative thinking in IBD students. The results will provide a more
comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting individual psychology and
offer suggestions to help IBD students reduce overthinking.
7
Secondly, worrying can be described as feelings of fear and anxiety, and due to
anticipating harmful events. Individuals may become fixated on minor details and lose
perspective on the larger picture, such as the low probability of a negative scenario
occurring and the high probability of being able to handle it effectively if it does occur
(Vanourek, 2023).
8
2019). Extra thinking causes excess brain activity, which depletes the protein. Finally,
overthinking affects your social skills. When people spend more time negatively
speculating what others think of them, it often creates fear and avoidance of social
situations.
9
part of freshmen when changing living and studying environments leads to thinking a lot.
They take a long time to balance finances, accommodation, and relationships and a lot of
problems arise, especially for students away from home, studying stressful majors like
Medicine (Dennehy, 2020). The last impact we want to mention is the advice of friends.
A good example shows that, when people introduce their lover to their close friends,
there will immediately be many opinions that they should break up with their love for
many reasons that are considered dangerous. It can be seen that under the pressure of
negative advice, people will constantly generate many doubts and fears, leading to
overthinking.
As the demonstration continues, the study will be able to discuss some internal
causes. The inability to manage negative emotions is a major cause of overthinking.
When encountering unsatisfactory things in life, many young people tend to think so
much about that problem that they lose sleep and eat, however, those thoughts do not
help solve the problem (Yulianti, 2022). Problems are facing, even becoming more and
more confusing, and difficult to solve. Because these people tend to think a lot about
things that happened in the past or worry about things that have not happened in the
future. Not only with big problems, even a small change can cause people with this
syndrome to get stuck in their thoughts. Moreover, people are becoming overthinkers
because they do not have enough confidence in themselves.

This bar chart shows the proportion of IBD students who have ever overthought.
The percentage up to approximately 90% of the total number of students taking the
survey. It can be seen that almost all IBD students engage in overthinking, with only a
small portion reporting never experiencing it.

Moreover, overthinking is also shown based on gender, and this pie chart details
the division in gender among overthinking. The number of female IBD students
11
overthinking is indeed more than twice of male IBD students. This is evidence that the
girls in IBD students usually overthink more than others.

Next, the pie chart illustrates the frequency of overthinking among IBD students.
The number of IBD students who occasionally overthink accounts for 1/3 of the total,
followed by 1/5 of IBD students who generally overthink. Additionally, the percentages
of IBD students who often, occasionally, and always overthink are approximately 13%,
9.3%, and 7.4% respectively. Notably, only a small number of students engage in
frequent overthinking, with percentages of usually, hardly, rarely, and never amounting
to 3.75%.

In addition to gender and time, the study also mentions the level of IBD students
overthinking. The second bar shows that first-year students tend to have the most
overthinking, accounting for 63% which doubled the number of sophomores. The second
highest position belongs to seniors at 50%, who believe this period leads to a higher
13
occurrence of overthinking. The number of juniors who encounter overthinking problems
is 31.5%. Indeed, overthinking is usually concentrated among freshmen and seniors.

0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80
There are several internal reasons mentioned in this chart. Approximately 76% of
IBD students think that they lack of management negative emotional skills while lacking
of confidence is also considered one of the factors that lead to overthinking, with a figure
of over 48%. The chart also shows that 1,9% of other internal reasons such as having too
much free time or always feeling incomplete can lead to overthinking.

The bar chart mentions external causes such as family, friends, school, and society
that contribute to overthinking. A large number of people who have experienced a
traumatic event in the past led to overthinking, accounting for 53.7%, followed by 46.3%
who are affected by social media. Moreover, the influence of friends is also a significant
cause that makes IBD students a victim of overthinking, with a proportion of up to
44.4%, which is higher than the other two groups of reasons related to environmental
factors such as family and university life by 11.1%.

over 81% of votes, followed closely by traveling or having a picnic with about 78%
choosing this option. Additionally, approximately 60% of IBD students surveyed chose
to spend time shopping or watching movies as they believe it is an effective way to
eliminate negative thinking. A small proportion of around 6% chose to solve the problem
by sleeping, while only 1.9% of interviewees say that taking meditation is a form of
entertainment.

new accomodations. When you are busy, needing to spend time and concentration to
build new life is extremely essential in stead of using the time to overthinking.
Thirdly, there is a traditional method but it is still quite popular among teenagers,
especially introverted students, which is journaling, blogging. This action is meaningful
to release detrimental energy by themselves, so it helps them to decrease stress without
other’s influence. This method focuses on self-healing, which has an advantage beacause
of writing all the processes to improve their emotions. However, we think that some
people choosing this way can lead to a more serious situation due to the difficulty in self-
control emotion.
Fourthtly, this is the message to student council and school management that they
should more take care of the mental heath of IBD students. The groups to share
psychological knowledge or meaningful activities should be organized regularly to raise
student’s awareness. Specially, these communities about study, love, or health can be an
ideal environment to open and seek sympathy from others.
Finally, we know that the research has various mistakes while you read it because
it is limited time to complete. We believe that such research has all efforts, minds, and
hearts of writers. We wish this report brings a lot of helpfulness to remove overthinking
on IBD students.
Chapter V: Conclusion
The research indicates the reality status and some relevant information of
overthinking on IBD students. As a result, people need to attention to the mental health
problems because the majority of students have too much negative thinking in various
kinds. It can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and even depression, which can ultimately
affect physical health. However, there are strategies that students can use to manage their
overthinking, which are mentioned in the study. Students need to prioritize their mental
health and seek help when needed, to avoid the negative consequences of overthinking.
