This term ‘s focus is poetry. Read and hand write the answers to the questions below in your notebook to
show your teacher how well you can answer analytical questions. Do read all the questions before you start as
you should aim to use different evidence from the poem to support your answers. You can annotate the poem
electronically using comment if you wish, but this will not be marked.
Read the short story and then do the task at the end.
Ihimaera is a writer from New Zealand who uses NZ English and Te Reo Maori (the language of Maori - the
indigenous people of NZ) in his writing. You may need the glossary below to help you.
After you have read the short story, complete the following tasks in your notebook.
1. What is the main idea / message of the story? Explain using evidence from the story.
2. Different generations are conveyed in this story. Explain how each generation is represented (ie. are
they kind, selfish, thoughtless, disliked, etc.) using evidence from the story and as much technical
jargon (eg. for formal analysis; language features; structure) as you can.
3. Extension question, if you have time: explain which character you most identify with and why using
evidence from the story.
