Definitions Unit 1&3
Earth:
The Earth is round like a huge ball. We call this shape a sphere.
It looks blue because of water.
The Sun:
The Sun gives us warmth, light and helps plants grow.
Continents:
There are seven huge areas of land on Earth. They are called continents.
Asia:
The largest continent.
Antarctica:
The coldest continent with fewest people.
Country:
A country is an area of land that has its own name, flag, government, money, and language.
Russia:
Is the largest country.
Vatican:
Is the smallest country . Located in Rome.
Oceans:
Huge areas of water on the surface of the Earth. There are five oceans on Earth.
The Pacific Ocean:
The largest and deepest ocean.
The Arctic Ocean:
Most of it is frozen and covered with ice.
Seas:
Smaller areas of salty water.
Environment:
The world around us is called our environment it includes the air, water, land, places where we live,
plants and animals. Our food, clothes, homes and toys come from our environment.
Dropping litter, making noise, wasting water and electricity is bad for our environment.
Recycling:
Reuse or turn into something useful.
Compost bin:
Old fruit and vegetable peelings can be put into a compost bin to rot away the put into the soil to
help plants grow.
Seaside:
Is where the land meets the sea.
Beach:
The edge of the sea. They are made of sand, shingle, mud or rocks.
Waves:
Are made by the wind.
Tides:
Caused mainly by the moon.
Seaside villages:
Are built on a hill cliff near the sea .
1. Easy to defend against enemies.
2. Sheltered harbours.
3. Good fishing.
Large ships which carry cargoes from one country to another.
Holiday resorts:
Where people go for holidays and have fun.
Malta:
Is a small island in the Mediterranean sea.
Florida:
Is part of the United States of America.
Jamaica:
Is an island in the Caribbean Sea.
Fish traps:
The trap contains food for the fish to eat. When the fish go into the trap to eat food they cannot go
out.
Long nets:
A long net is dragged through the water. The net surrounds the fish which are then pulled a shore.
The trawler:
It drags a net like a huge string bag through the water until it is full of fish.
Fish farming:
Scientists are trying new ways of farming fish in the sea, for example using large cages.
