1. GENERAL
1.1 Purpose of the method statement

The main purpose of this method statement is to outlines general methods proposed to
reinstate of peeling and damaged paint on surfaces of steel material such as ductile iron
grating cover, iron flap gates and etc.

1.2 Definition

⚫ Project: Cote d’ Ivoire Terminal

⚫ Works: Reinstatement of damaged Painting

⚫ Employer: CÔTE D'IVOIRE TERMINAL SA

⚫ Engineer: SETEC

⚫ Contractor: CHINA HARBOUR ENGINEERING COMPANY LTD.

2. WORK SCOPE

This method statement covers steps to be followed for reinstating of damaged painting on
material surfaces on site.

3. WORK METHODOLOGY
3.1 General requirements

In the event that the protective system should sustain damage prior to installation, then the area
concerned shall be cleaned back to bare metal and the protection system be re-applied for the
full thickness.
Work shall not proceed when the steel surfaces are wet or the ambient temperature, or dew
point is below that recommended by the paint manufacturer. Repair materials shall be stored,
mixed and applied strictly in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
3.2 Preparation
Before beginning a work of repairing damaged Coating, these following points shall be taken
into account and verified:
▪ All painting system to be used shall be as per project specifications and requirements;

▪ Every possible precaution shall be taken to ensure that the damaged surface shall be
thoroughly clean, dry and free from condensation, moisture, dust, oil, grease, rust, dirt
and other contaminants before application of touch up process;

Page 6 of 16
Cote d’ Ivoire Terminal

▪ Manufacturer’s name, initials, or recognized trademark;

▪ Title, specification number and product data sheet;

▪ Whether the material is primer, undercoat, or finishing coat;

▪ Method of application;

▪ Batch number and date of manufacture.

3.3 Operating procedures

3.3.0 Preparation of surface (cleaning)

This cleaning process shall be mandatory, whereby the surface to be painted shall be
completely and free from burrs, rust, loose scale, dirt, dust, grease, oil and other foreign matter
deleterious and harmful to paint by using hand wire brushes. After preparation of substrate
surface, any generated dust or dirt shall be removed and a layer of primer applied before any
corrosion or recontamination occurs, normally within 4 hours after cleaning.

3.3.1 Paint Application

Paintings shall be uniformly applied and before application of any further painting of material,
all loose to previous paints shall be removed to a firm edge. special attention shall be paid to
crevices, corners, edges, weld lines, bolts heads, nuts and small brackets to apply the specified
minimum dry film thickness by spray paint gun to completely cover all surfaces. Primers shall
not be over-coated with the second coat paint until the specified minimum over-coating time
is achieved. Inter-coat contamination shall be minimized by maintaining proper cleanliness
and by applying the intermediate and finishing coats within the over-coating time
recommended by the paint manufacturer.

SIGMADUR™ 550

RECOMMENDED SUBSTRATE CONDITIONS AND TEMPERATURES

Substrate conditions
• Previous coat (epoxy or polyurethane) must be dry and free from any contamination
• Previous coat: surface should be sufficiently roughened if necessary

Substrate temperature and application conditions

• Substrate temperature during application at -5°C (23°F) is acceptable; provided the substrate is free from ice and dry
• Substrate temperature during application and curing should be at least 3°C (5°F) above dew point
• Relative humidity during application and curing should not exceed 85%
• Should condensation on the surface occur during, or soon after application, this could result in color and gloss change

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

Mixing ratio by volume: base to hardener 88:12
• The temperature of the mixed base and hardener should be above 10°C (50°F), otherwise extra thinner may be required to
obtain application viscosity
• Thinner should be added after mixing the components
• Adding too much thinner results in reduced sag resistance
