Practical 1 (week 2)
Hand Sanitiser Results

Faculty of Science
FACULTY OF SCIENCE 2

Discussion Points hand Sanitiser Prac

Most people had at least 3 and often 4-5 types of bacteria on their hands, at
time 0.

This included Staph epidermidis, Staph aureus, micrococcus, Streps, Bacillus,

E.coli(maybe)

We saw a few fungus contaminations

To identify the bacteria more fully, we could plate the organisms onto
other types of differential and selective media.
Do more biochemical tests. PCR and Sequencing

We saw a big range of numbers at time 0

From 0 to ‘too many to count’

Discussion Points hand Sanitiser Prac

Why this difference in initial cell number?

• Some students said they sanitised their hands coming into class,
this could have reduced their initial reading
• We did not time how long they all swabbed their hands
• How wet the swabs where
• Did they all swab under their fingernails and between the fingers

Overall the numbers of bacteria fell from time 0 to time 5 mins and
then started to increase by 60 mins
There were some outliers- with some seeing a fall at 60 mins but not
at 5 mins.

By 5 and 60mins the number of different colony types on the plates

had fallen. Mostly this was staph epidermidis.
