Students will be able to

How to convert numbers using place value understanding. Apply knowledge of place value to the operation of subtraction, through regrouping.

Convert numbers using place value understanding. Apply knowledge of place value to the operation of subtraction.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence Assessment will be informal. As we work through problems together, I will make note of areas to develop. Student will gradually be given more independence through the lesson, as successes are noted. Student will not advance to next phase of lesson if he/she isnt ready for it.

Introduction:
We are going to work together today on subtraction. What do you know about subtraction? Should we work on some subtraction together?

Procedures:
This lesson is put together in phases for the student to work through. We will start with a review of basic subtraction. Once the student is successful with the subtraction, we will progress to the next phase. The next phase of the lesson is working with virtual manipulatives. The manipulatives are available online for free through the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives. We will look at place value and how we can regroup different values. Once student is successful working through the regrouping, we will progress to the next phase. The next phase of the lesson is combining subtraction with regrouping. The NLVM has a program in which students can practice this kind of subtraction problem. The program will show the students the manipulatives and the mathematical notation. Once the student is successful with a component of the lesson, we will build on the knowledge. Approximate flow of lesson: *Review of Subtraction with no regrouping *If student is successful with this process, we will move on *Introduction to Regrouping *Using virtual manipulatives showing a group of ten being broken into 10 ones. *If student is successful with this process, we will move on *Double digit subtraction using regrouping *Student will use virtual manipulatives to solve problems *Practice on Paper (turned sideways, to make a column for each place value) *Student will be able to check answers using virtual manipulatives.

Closure:
I am very impressed with how well you did with this lesson today. What other kinds of math would you like to work on one-on-one? We have some more time (additional weeks at practicum) in which I would be able to work more with you.
