Hi there, classmate!

v
I am Erwan and with me is
Anne.
Are you as excited as I am as we
are to learn more about Forces
and Motion?
Come and let us discover
together!
Hello there Anne, Erwan and to you!
I am Teacher Rod and I will be your
assistant/buddy/facilitator or whatever you want to
call me, in unlocking new science concepts for today.

In this module, we will discover underlying

relationships between force and motion, how they are
both related to each other, what other factors affect
their relationship.

We will go through a fun-filled learning journey. Are

you ready?
Science Concepts to

Force? Motion?

How are these two

related?
How mass affects its
relationship?

MOTION
Hello! It’s me again! As your
assistant, I will introduce you briefly
what are the things you are going to
GUIDE CARD expect from this.

I will be giving you fun games and

drills which will help in deepening
your understanding on the subject to
be discussed.

[Anne] Teacher Rod, I

am really excited with
our topic. This is sure
fun and interesting!

That’s great, Anne!

How about you, are you
excited, too? Can you share
what exactly makes motion
occur in
an object?

Force is the primary cause of changes in motion. An
object can be moved by pushing or pulling. In physics,
this push and pull is referred to as force (F). To
accurately describe the forces acting on an object, it is
important for you to be familiar first with the following
terms: magnitude, direction, point of application, and
line of action.
Magnitude is the size or strength of force;
Direction of the force; the line of action is the straight
line passing through; and the point of application is
parallel to the direction of the force.

With forced being
defined, how can I
possibly make this
object move? `

This is how you do it, Erwan! Force as

defined as the main cause of motion, in
order to make the object move push it
from one end. Voila! The object moves

Force

Once force is applied on an object,

the object moves. That movement is
an indicator of change inLet us tal
motion
since the object is no longer inacts
its
original position/place. Furthermore
when force is exerted on an object, a
equal amount of force is exerted back
Line of Action on it.
Ceiling We learned previously that all
objects fall down because gravity
Line pulls on them towards the center of
of Action the earth. But what makes the pen
and the book stay at rest? The bulb
stays in place because of another
force that acts on it that is supplied
by the string which we refer to in
physics as tension force (T)….

….The book, on the other hand,

stays at rest because of the
upward push exerted on it by the
table which we refer to as normal
force (Fn). Both the tension force
Tension and normal force counteract the
Force pull of gravity (Fg) that acts on
the objects….

….. In this cases, we can infer

that the objects remained at rest
because the forces acting on
them are equal in magnitude
and in opposite directions and
they lie along the same line of
action. The forces are
Force of BALANCED.

Now that we have discussed

force, its types and how it
correlates motion.
Let us have an
understanding check, do you
have further clarifications or
inquiries?

No questions from our end,

Sir Rod. Everything is
clear and concise!
I’m even more excited
what other concepts I will
learn beyond this.

question/s here!
I will be giving my answer as we
give you the next module.
Combining Forces

Formula for Combining Forces

Fnet = Fn + Fg
Fnet: Net Force
Fn: Normal Force
Fg: Gravitational Force

When we combine or add forces to determine the net

or unbalanced forces, we will limit our discussion to
those forces that act along the same line of action. The
algebraic signs (+) an (–) are used to indicate the
direction of forces. Unlike signs are used for forces
acting in opposite directions while like signs for forces
acting in the same direction.
If the sum of the forces equate to zero, they are
considered balanced. The non-zero sum is the net or
unbalanced force. This unbalanced or net force would
cause a change in a body’s state of motion.
Sample Problem
I will give you
an example:
3 units
3 units

If both Fg and Fn are given a

magnitude
value of 3 units acting on an
object in the opposite direction,
what will be the net force?

Fnet = Fn + Fg
= 3 units + (-3 units)
Fnet = 0 (balanced)
Congratulations!
This ends our interactive
discussion on Forces and Motion!
