work/activity : Memorial Inspection

Location : Cemetery

 Potential of unstable memorials falling on inspector.


 Potential of unstable memorials falling on other persons
 Potential of sudden breakage of memorial or joint, causing inspector to fall.
 Poor manual handling techniques when making safe smaller memorials or components
Significant hazards : as part of inspection process.
 Poor inspection technique (particularly with prolonged inspections) increasing risk of
muscular / skeletal injury.
 Slip, trip fall
 Lone working hazards if working independently

 Comprehensive training in this discipline in both memorial safety and manual handling
 Awareness of slipping and tripping hazards, wear suitable footwear with good grip
 Work to proceed in compliance with a memorial safety policy
 Assess manual handling implications and comply with best practice. Only lift / lower
Existing control memorials within capability. Larger memorials, utilise second person or gantry
measures :  Compliance with manufacturer’s instructions if any force measuring equipment is used.
 Warning notices for the public
 Wear suitable PPE to including toetector boots/shoes. Gloves to be worn if required

Do Not:
 Stand in front of a memorial when testing
 Strain to exert suitable force on a memorial
 Lean on any untested memorials
 Try to support a falling memorial

Do:
 Work in accordance with training provided...for memorial inspection and manual handling
 Ensure you have a mobile phone with you and check in on a regular basis if working alone
 Ensure you have a solid footing prior to beginning the test
 Be careful when working around untested memorials
 Be careful when working in kerbed areas and wear suitable non-slip protective footwear
