7.57 Are the DFD’s in PE figures 7.1 and 7.2 balanced? Show that they are or

are not. If they are not balanced, how can they be fixed?

 No, the DFD’s in the figure 7.1 and 7.2 are not balanced. In order for the DFD’s to be

balanced the number or amount of inputs and outputs in both the context and Level 1

diagram should be same, but in the case of figure 7.1 and 7.2, the context diagram is

missing Marketing and product databases which is clearly mentioned in the Level 1

diagram. To balance the mentioned DFD’s, marketing and product data source should

be added in context diagram figure 7.1.

7.58 Decompose each of the processes in PE figure 7-2 and draw a new DFD

for each of the core process.

 Customers purchases any product from the company with or without the promotional

coupon. This data is then sent to customer activity records from where promotions are

generated and sent to customer.

 Coupons are sent by Marketing database as well as part of promotion to specific

customers.

 Customer’s activity report is generated from tracking customer activities and the

report is sent to the customer.

 Promotion database also send promotion to the customer based on their buying pattern

and behaviour.

7.59 Has the team overlooked any core processes in the system that should be

in PE Table 7-1 and figure 7-2? What would they be? Add them to PE Table 7-

1and PE figure 7-2.

 One of the core process that the team might have overlooked in table 7-1 and figure 7-

2 is the creation of Coupons from the data gathered by the customer’s activity,

marketing team and promotional database. Before sending the coupon to customer it

must be generated first by using all the above mentioned data sources.

7.60 Redesign PE figures 7-1 and 7-2 so that they are easier to understand,

more efficient and more comprehensive.

7.61 Why is it important for the team to create DFDs if they are not going to write

the actual system code themselves?

 It is important for the team to create DFDs because the analysis of data flow diagrams

can help in identifying the issues in the process flow. Since they are the graphical

representation of process so DFDs make it easier to analyse a process and to detect

the source of generation of data, the processing done on it and the final output. DFDs

help in determining the relation between various data sources and other system

components. DFDs are very useful in identifying issue with any system component

which can be rectified at the design or coding stage.
