MBA502 - EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE, CULTURAL

INTELLIGENCE AND DIVERSITY - EI SELF-REFLECTIVE REPORT

- ASSIGNMENT 1

Student name:
Student Id:
Introduction
The forthcoming report is based on the concept of Emotional Intelligence and this will reflect
my understanding which I have learned during class. Thus, with the help of Goleman’s
Emotional Intelligence, two domains will be focused and that is self-awareness and self-
management. Moreover, I will also conduct the psychometric test and another emotional
intelligence test that will reflect my outcomes, and based upon the results the implications
will be identified. Apart from that, I will reflect on some of the implications for my future
career and how this will make me a better individual. Also, the report will discuss where I
need to improve more and where I am lacking so that with the help of self-awareness and
self-management, I will be able to improve my lacking areas and so with this, the efficiency
can be maintained and the goals and objectives can be achieved in a greater way.

Self-awareness
Self-awareness as per Goleman reflects that it is the first and utmost vital of the steps which
need to be understood in the development of the individual emotional intelligence. Therefore,
I learned that once the individual begins toward understanding the concept then they can
change their behavior. Thus, I also learned from the weeks that self-awareness is extremely
important because it enables confidence and creativity and this helps me in increasing my
abilities for making sound decisions, improved communication with others, and make me
extra effective towards my work and generate better chances of promotion. With the help of
self-awareness behavior and outcomes, I can make better decisions in the future and this will
enable me to improve my overall performance and at the same time, I can focus on various
activities (Hadiwijaya and Hutasoit, 2017, p.5). As I sometimes can’t handle difficult
situations so with the help of self-awareness, I will try to change this behavior and will also
try to find out solutions for tough situations. Thus, self-awareness is mainly understanding of
my emotions, strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and needs and through this, I learned that I
want to become emotionally intelligent then the first step is mainly to increase my self-
awareness (Md-Nawi et al., 2017, p.38).

As per the Emotional Intelligence Test taken by me, it was observed that I have a great
knowledge of social awareness which means that I have three greater competencies in myself
that is empathy, organizational awareness, and adaptability. Empathy means understanding
the behavior of other people and showing interest in knowing their concerns. Organizational
awareness refers to my ability to build a strong decision network with organization, navigate
several policies and I have a great sense of service orientation which means I can meet the
needs and requirements of the customer in the best possible way, and adaptability means I am
a success-oriented kind of a person. I have a good knowledge of relationship management as
well as self-management but need to improve I have little self-awareness that can help in
achieving high success in the future. (Refer appendix 1)

As per the multiple intelligence test, my strongest intelligence is spatial-visual intelligence

and logical-mathematical intelligence, then it comes to musical intelligence, naturalistic
intelligence, existential intelligence, linguistic intelligence, and inter and intrapersonal
intelligence. I need to improve my capabilities and knowledge in bodily-kinesthetic
intelligence which can help me in increasing my intelligence level in every field. (Refer
appendix 2)

According to the Myers-Briggs Test Indicator (MBTI), I am an entertainer kind of a

personality, who is extraverted, competitive, organized, emotionally stable and well-
maintained, and traditional. Therefore, I think that all these characteristic trait help to grow
and develop myself as an introvert personality who like to develop and grow while
interacting with people and socialize with other inside and outside a workplace and family
gatherings. I am more intuitive and make well-defined decisions, I am a confident person
with good character traits. All these characteristic traits help me to recognize myself and
create self-awareness which helps me to grow myself faster and easier (Refer to appendix 3
and 4)

Self-management
“Self-management is the component of emotional intelligence that frees us from being a
prison of our feelings”. Thus, self-management is emotional adulthood and it is reflected as
the gap amongst thinking and saying or else doing. Therefore, self-management is further
than about managing my time, goals, commitments, and so on. It is all about managing my
emotions and I learned that the person needs abilities for thinking before acting towards it
and also being able for managing moods and impulses. Moreover, self-management skills are
my abilities for regulating and controlling my actions, thoughts, as well as feelings and I, can
be able to control impulsive behavior and feelings, manage my emotions in a well way,
taking initiative, following through upon the commitments, and at the same time adapting
changing situations (Alaamri, 2020). From the weeks I have learned that it is extremely
important for the individual to manage their behavior and emotions otherwise, it can impact
future career and create issues in achieving goals and objectives. Furthermore, when having
stronger self-management skills, I can able to set goals independently and can take initiative
for achieving the goals. Determined self-management helps me to direct the route of my
career and make sure that I seek opportunities that get me closer to my goals (Lawn, Zhi and
Morello, 2017).

As per the Anxiety and depression checklist (K10) taken by me, I observed that I fall under
the category of the moderate range which means as per the answer provided by me in the test,
it analyzed that I experience certain symptoms of pressure, and distress over the past 4 weeks
that reflect in my behavior and in my work an social living environment. There are the early
symptoms of distress that can’t be ignored, I need to look upon myself, need to seek support,
involve myself in extra-circular activities which I like, and through which I can surpass my
level of distress and pressure upon myself. The best way to overcome the problem of distress
is to keep yourself involved in those activities that are is the most liked by you whether it is
working, sports, art, music, or anything which makes you feel happy from within. (Refer
Appendix 5)

Implications for my future career

Seen that emotional intelligence is greatly recognized as a valuable skill that helps me to
improve communication, management, solving problems, and relations in the workplace and
this is a skill that can be enhanced through training programs and practices. Thus, with the
help of emotional intelligence, it makes my future career effective because this will help me
to generate stronger relationships, and succeeding at the workplace or currently working and
also enable me to achieve my personal as well as career goals. Moreover, this will also help
me for connecting with my feelings, turning intentions into actions, and thus making
informed decisions which matters to me the most (Santos, Wang and Lewis, 2018, p.296).
Apart from this, through the aspect of self-awareness and self-management skills and the
things which I learned from the classes, this will help me to understand my emotions and
behavior so that I can take decisions effectively and this also helps to improve my current
skills. Thus, through this, I recognized that with the support of effective decision-making and
self-management skills I can be able to achieve the objectives that I have decided
(Parmentier, Pirsoul and Nils, 2019, p.109446).

As per the Social Intelligence Test conducted by me, I observed that I have an average skill of
reading the emotions of others. This test had provided me the ability to analyze the
expression and behavior or emotions of other people while working inside or outside of a
workplace. It is very important for me as a person to develop my social intelligence skills so
that while coming across a person I can analyze whether he or she is really good towards me
or just pretending to be good towards me. There are many people in our lives with whom we
interact but we don’t realize whether their presence is influencing our lives positively or
negatively. This trait helps us to observe people and analyze whether they are actually happy
from our successor not by analyzing or reading their expressions and emotions.
Conclusion
From the overall report, it has been concluded the aspect of my learnings which I have
learned in four weeks, and with this, I identified at self-awareness helps me to read one’s
emotions. Therefore, it was determined that through Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence model
self-awareness and self-management terms can be generated and it was described that how
these can be effective for my current and future performance. Moreover, I also conducted a
psychometric test and another emotional intelligence test that reflected my outcomes, and
based upon the results the implications were identified. Apart from this, it was described my
further improvement areas so that I can improve my future career and this can enable me in
achieving my goals. Though, it was determined that it is important for everyone to focus
greatly on their self-awareness and self-management areas as it enhances the overall growth
of an individual.
