Section 1: Summary
A story about an African Canadian promising up a comer hockey player Josh Crooks.

During a game a coach said let’s keep everything all white, Josh didn’t know what that meant

leading to feeling pressures of racism in hockey. Realizing African players are underrepresented

in hockey. Josh came to find out the history of a black hockey league in Atlantic Canada in the

1800’s to the 1930’s, coming to realize his determination comes from pioneers from the past.

With help from other mentors he came across the realization on how important hockey is to the

African Canadian heritage through the pioneers of the sport.

Section 2: Identification of Sociological Content

Issues surrounding racism is the major concern in this story. All starting back when a

coach said, “keep everything white” and the head coach was seen just smirking. Josh was a

black player that was potentially being held back because of the color of this skin. The African

Canadian league wasn’t even talked about or little to no facts were being presented at the hockey

hall of fame for Nova Scotia.

These circumstances played a toll on Josh’s father and mother when it attacked them

emotionally when they came to realize the color of their sons’ skin was holding him back from

getting the attention from the coaches and opportunities others were getting. It was getting harder

for Josh to get the right help from his hockey piers you could tell in different scenes from short

film it was taking a toll on him mentally which could of affected his playing ability with putting

less work in, while focusing more on the affects of racism on hockey in my opinion.

Racism in sports still goes on to this day with more and more people coming out with

their experiences. Its important to come to a point where these players need help mentally with

what they deal with throughout their journey. Racism has no spot across Canadian sports, but

people are still ignorant to the fact on their views. I don’t think people’s views are going to

change regardless of what society does, but I thinks it’s important to teach people about the

rights everyone must being treated as one and no matter the difference amongst each other.
