Desperate Move
Hafiz runs a tailoring business in Kamunting, a small town in North Perak.
His business is on the decline due to competition from other tailors nearby.
He owes money to a few business suppliers. The debt has become overdue.
Hafiz is desperate to secure an additional loan keep away insistent
creditors. He believes he can secure a conventional loan from the bank so
long as he can support his claims with a positive financial report. Hafiz
asked Khatijah who is a public accountant to ‘cook the books’ and do
whatever she could to make the financial accounts appear as favorable as
possible. When Khatijah questioned his intentions, Hafiz became anxious
and threatened to withdraw Khatijah’s services unless she complied with his
request. Khatijah was left
considering her choices; she may either accept or reject Hafiz’s request.

The Qur'an is the holy book of Islam that contains the teachings of Allah as
revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. It is considered the primary source of
Islamic ethics, as it provides guidance on how individuals should interact with
each other, with the environment, and with Allah. The Sunnah, on the other hand,
refers to the actions and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad. It serves as a
secondary source of Islamic ethics, as it provides practical examples of how to
apply the teachings of the Qur'an in everyday life.

In my opinion, Khatijah should reject the topic since, according to Islamic beliefs,
we should be honest in our profession. It is mentioned in the hadith Surah Al
Anfal Ayat 27 “O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger
or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].” The verse serves as a
reminder that betraying these trusts is a grave sin and a breach of faith. It is a
betrayal of the trust placed upon believers by Allah and His Messenger, as well
as a violation of the trust others have placed in them. Khatijah should also be
trusted so that all work will be agreeable to Allah SWT so that sustenance will be
more blessed, and all work must be performed with trust so that it will be more
flawless and pleasing to Allah SWT.

In conclusion, we should apply Islamic ethics in a job because it is compulsory for

a Muslim to achieve the pleasure of Allah SWT and mercy. It is also obligatory for
us to apply Islamic ethics because it is obligatory for us to apply Islamic ethics.
