Stat 355 discussion Exercise (taken from section 1.

4 of the book)

a. Sort the data

b. Compute the mean and the median of this data
c. Compute the quartiles
d. Construct the box plot
e. Obtain the stem and leaf plot
f. Suppose that 205 was added to the data then, Obtained the 10%
trimmed mean and compare it with raw mean.
Answer:
a. Data sorted in increasing order of their magnitude is:

87 87 93 99 103 105 119 129 130 132 138 145 145 152 153 160 180 195 211
n=19 (odd), smallest value=87, largest value 211
∑ 𝑥𝑖 = 2563; ∑ 𝑥𝑖2 = 368501
b. Now since n is odd
𝑛+1 𝑡ℎ
𝑥̃ = ( ) value
2
19+1 𝑡ℎ
=(
2
) 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 = 10𝑡ℎ 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 =132
c. Now to compute the quartiles, observe that the median=Q2, has divided
the data into two equal parts so, there are 9 observations less than 132 a
nd 9 observations greater than 132. So Q1 will be the median of lower 9 v
alues
 Q1=103 and Q3 will be the median of the upper 9 observations
 Q3=153
d. The box plot of the data is given below

e. The stem and leaf plot is given as follows

f. If 205 is added to the data then the new sorted list will become:

87 87 93 99 103 105 119 129 130 132 138 145 145 152 153 160 180 195 205,
211
The 10% trimmed mean= 0.1*20=2
 Drop 2 values from either ends.
∑18
3 𝑥𝑖 2178
So 𝑥̅𝑡𝑟(10%)= = = 136.125
16 16

∑20
𝑖=1 𝑥𝑖 2768
The raw mean for this data is 𝑥̅ = =138.4
20 20
This indicates that the raw mean was affected by extremely large values.
Class Activity: the following data was obtained from problem 72 of
supplementary exercise of chapter 1

1. For PTSD data,

a. Obtain the five number summary and construct the box plot.
b. Compute the raw mean and 15% trimmed mean.
2. Construct comparative stem and leaf plot and comment on it.
