CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND IT'S BACKGROUND

"Philosophy is the highest music"-Plato

Pop and K-pop music are two popular genres that have gained widespread popularity among young
listeners, particularly students. These genres of music are known for their catchy melodies, upbeat
rhythms, and oftentimes, provocative lyrics. While listening to pop and K-pop can be a pleasurable
experience, there is also a growing concern about the potential influence of these music genres on the
moral values of young listeners.

Previous research has suggested that the media, including music, can influence the attitudes, beliefs,
and behaviors of young people. For instance, studies have shown that exposure to violent or sexual
content in music can lead to desensitization to violence and increased sexual behavior among young
people. Additionally, research has also indicated that listening to music with aggressive or sexist lyrics
can lead to increased aggression and gender stereotypes among young listeners.

Given the potential influence of music on young people, it is important to investigate the relationship
between listening to pop and K-pop music and the moral values of students. By exploring this
relationship, people can gain a better understanding of the potential influence of these music genres
on the moral development of young people. This research study aims to fill this gap in the studies by
examining the relationship between listening to pop and K-pop music and the moral values of
students.

To accomplish this goal, the researchers will conduct a survey of students to assess their listening
habits, moral values, and other relevant factors. The findings of this study will provide valuable
insights into the relationship between listening to pop and K-pop music and the moral values of
students. This information can be used to inform interventions and policies aimed at promoting
positive moral development among young people. Overall, this research study has the potential to
shed light on the role of music in shaping the moral values of young people and provide important
insights into the potential influence of pop and K-pop music on students.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Music has been a big part of people's daily lives, from ancient times up to modern times.
Varying forms of music preexist, as different musical arrangements serve different purposes. It is used
to express beliefs, feelings, and mood. Music preference plays a greater role in entertainment and
expression. It is even known as the universal language, as musical structures themselves, such as
tonality, ornamentation and tempo can help people to identify the music's meaning and support
certain behaviors (Asprou 2020). Many studies also support the idea that different types of music can
alter the development of moral values.

The music genre pop has been above the top consumed media, as the word itself means popular. Pop
music is made and produced with an intent to be captivating and marketable. The artists themselves
frequently have a goal in mind for how their listeners should feel while listening to their songs. This
allows the artist to make audiences consume more pop music. Vocals are the most important part of
pop music because it is what builds the song. Best selling songs' themes can range from sad to upbeat
lyrics. For that reason, many suggest that these musical structures can have an influence on the
listeners' moral values.

Meanwhile, the growth of K-pop arose as the pandemic started, although the genre has been around
since the late 90s. K-pop originated in South Korea, combining western pop culture with hip hop
culture. The K-pop industry often targets markets universally around the globe, even if the song has
some or no English lyrics at all. Many K-pop fans find themselves consuming K-pop and buying albums,
without knowing and understanding the lyrics. As a result, studies suggest that the music's
construction itself plays a significant role in what makes a song pop and mainstream, independent of
the listeners' cultural origin (Boer, 2009).

Listeners continue to consume music habitually, not knowing if the genre can affect their moral
values. Music listening peaks among older teens, from ages 16 to 24. (Demographic Music Interest,
2022). These are the ages where moral values are still being shaped and developed. This implies that
listening to a certain genre of music, specifically pop or K-pop, can have an influence on students'
moral development of values. This paper dives deeper into the positive and negative influence on
moral values of frequent listening to the music genres pop and K-pop, focusing on the moral values of
empathy, compassion, and hard work.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Pop and K-pop music are popular among students and have a significant influence on their lives. The
following questions aim to explore the influence of these music genres on students' moral values:

1. What makes pop, or K-pop become preferred music genres for students?

2. How does listening to pop and K-pop music influence students' moral values?

3. Are there any differences in the influence of pop and K-pop music on students' moral values?

4. Can the influencing of moral values by preferred music genre be interfered by other variables?

RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

The research objective of this study is to explain why behaviors or moral values such as empathy,
compassion, and hard work occur by listening to different kinds of music genres. This research pursue
the following:

1. Identify the influence of preferred music genre to the moral values of senior high school students.

2. To determine the positive and negative influence of listening to music on the listener's behavior.

3. Furthermore, expand past studies about music and moral values and use them as a springboard for
future researchers.

By that the researchers expect negative and positive outcomes and problems that are soon to
encounter in the listeners' moral behavior. The researchers can achieve all of this by having a survey
and handing out questionnaires in Governor Ferrer memorial integrated national high school.

The researchers are pursuing this kind of topic because there are scarce amounts of studies about
these kinds of topics and are rare to find. The purpose of this study is mainly to explain and elaborate
why or how music genres: Pop and K-pop can easily affect listeners behavior, moral values, and virtue.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

Hermeneutical Phenomenology
Hermeneutical phenomenology will be the first foundation theory in this study. It is a philosophy for
interpreting human experience, so it is relevant to the study, which is finding the influence of music
genres on moral values. Listening to certain music genres can have a significant influence on one's
experience when one is sad, angry, or happy. It creates experience and understanding, it answers the
question of what is to be human and sees the perspectives of others.

Vygotsky's Theory of Social Effects on Cognition

The significance of social transmission in the cognitive development of young learners is emphasized
by Vygotsky's theory of social effects on cognition (McLeod, 2007; Shaffer, 1996).

This theory may be used to comprehend how students develop their perspectives on moral values and
how they are influenced by others around them especially in schools where activities like music,
computer technology, art, and physical education are accessible. The theory is relevant to the
research since it includes music, which will allow the researchers to evaluate how it influences the
moral values of the students.

Moral Foundation Theory and the Law (2010)

The theory presents five dimensions of morality, Care/Harm, Fairness/Cheating, Loyalty/Betrayal,

Authority/Subversion, and Purity/Degradation. These dimensions are connected to the moral values
the researchers aim to observe: compassion (Harm/Care), empathy (Harm/Care), and hard work
(Authority/Respect).

Social Identity Theory (Tajfel, 1978; Tajfel & Turner, 1979)

According to the theory, human beings define their self-identity based on the social groups they
belong to. The listeners in this study will be categorized into two groups: pop listeners and Kpop
listeners. Hence, each group should be able to identify the difference in the influence between the
group they belong to and in contrast to the other group.

Influence of pop and K-pop to moral values of senior high school students

Figure 1: CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The IPO model's graph shows the steps that the researchers will take to obtain the desired output
from the selected input. The input portion of the IPO model consists of conditions prior to the study.
Outputs are the researchers' predicted outcomes; they are not just speculations; they are derived
from previous studies. (I Research Net, 2016)

In this study, the researchers aim to determine the influence of preferred music genres on the moral
values of senior high school students. The researchers collected the variables and hypothesized the
possible situations the researchers might encounter. The figure demonstrates how the researchers
will gather the data needed to achieve the expected outcome The given inputs are: pop and K-pop
music consumption and its influence on the moral values of senior high school students. The following
processes will be performed by the researchers in order to accomplish the proposed output: a pre-
survey to collect variables, permission letters to the target participants; online questionnaires to
obtain information; and afterward, analysis and the interpretation of the results.

The researchers are to use a combination of thematic analysis, wherein they will identify factors that
are prevalent then analyze how they can influence the dependent variables, and comparative
analysis, in which they will analyze the influence of music on the moral values of pop listeners in
contrast to K-pop listeners. The researchers expect an output in which there will be a significant
influence on the moral values of students through listening to their preferred music genres.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study aims to determine the relationship between preferred music genre and moral values. The
study is limited to senior high school students of Governor Ferrer Memorial Integrated National High
Schoolthe school year 2023-2024, the participants should be pop or K-pop listeners. The researchers
conducted a pre-survey regarding the participants' most preferred genre and their moral values that
they think affect the most with their music genre. Moreover, the study will only cover music genres
(Pop and K-pop) and moral values (Empathy, compassion, and hard work). This study will focus on the
relationship between preferred music genres and moral values.
