Experiment-2: Measurement by Micrometer screw-gauge

(Small cylinder and metal )
Aim:- 1.To Determine the Volume of a cylinder by using Micrometer Screw Gauge.

2. To Determine the thickness of metal plate by using Micrometer Screw Gauge

Apparatus: - Micrometer screw gauge, small cylinder, metal plate, Magnifying lens,

Calculator etc

Errors of Micrometer Screw Gauge

Date:_____________________

Draw figure of Micrometer Screw Gauge:

Errors of Micrometer Screw Gauge:

Formula:-

1. Pitch of the Micrometer screw = Distance moved by the screw

Total no. of rotations performed
2. Least count of Micrometer screw = __ Pitch ______ = P_
Total no. of divisions on circular scale N
3. Volume of a cylinder is V = πR2L
Procedure:-

1. Determine pitch and least count of the Micrometer screw gauge using formula 1 & 2
respectively.
2. Bring the anvil and screw in contact with each other and find the zero error. Do it three
times and record them. If there is no zero error, then record ‘zero error nil’.
Date:_____________________

3. Move the screw away from the anvil and place the cylinder for measurement of its
diameter and move the screw towards the anvil using the ratchet head. Stop when the
ratchet slips without moving the screw.
4. Note down the main scale division that is visible and uncovered by the edge of the cap and
referred it as a main scale reading (MSR) i.e. A.
5. Find out the (CSR) circular scale reading the division of the circular scale lying
over the reference line and multiply this number with the least count to get
value B i.e. (B= CSR X L.C)
6. Find the total reading using the formula T.R. = MSR + (CSR X L.C) or C = A + B.
7. Do it three times and record them
8. Repeat the same procedure for measurement of length of the cylinder and thickness of
metal plate.
9. Calculate the volume of the cylinder using formula.

Simulator Procedure (as performed through the Online Labs):

1 We can select the least count of the screw gauge from the 'Select screw gauge'
drop down list.
2 The object of our choice can be chosen from the 'Select object' drop down list.
3 Click on the object to place it between the screw and the anvil to find its
measurement. To remove the object, click the object on the left menu once
more.
4 Click on the arrows seen on the screw head to tighten it till the screw touches
the object.
5 Note the PSR and HSR values.
6 Find the total reading and enter the value in the text box provided.
7 Click on the check button to verify the answer.
8 The 'Reset' button can be used to redo the experiment.

Observations:-
1. Distance moved by the screw (d) = ___________cm
2. Total no of rotations performed (n) = __________
3. Pitch of a micrometer screw (P) = d/n = __________cm
4. Total number of divisions on Circular scale (N) =
5. Least count of Micrometer screw = __ Pitch ______ = P_
Total no. of divisions on circular scale N

6. Error type of Micrometer screw gauge = Zero / Positive / Negative

7. Error (℮) = n x L.C = ___________________ = ____________cm
8. Correction (X ) = ______________cm
