3.3.1 Patient ID mode and Patient location mode
The HL7 message must include
 a timestamp, to know when the data to be converted
was captured.
 a patient identifier, to be able to map the HL7
message to the correct patient in the CIS.
The timestamp used in MSync is retrieved from a NTP
server available at the hospital LAN.
The patient identifier includes information about either the
bed location OR the social security number of the patient.
Which patient identifier that is to be used is decided by
selecting the mode of the Msync.
Section 3.3.1.1 Patient ID mode and Section 3.3.1.2
Patient location mode illustrate how the patient identifier
is retrieved and where the MSync geografically must be
placed.
Note that it is not visualized how the timestamp is
retrieved from the NTP server.

3.3.1.1 Patient ID mode

In this mode the MSync is mounted on the Getinge
device. For each treatment the clinician log in to MSync
with a PC in order to start data transfer and map the
correct patient P1 (ref. no. 2) to treat from a list (ref. no.
1) that is sent from the CIS.
The patient ID is included in the input data to MSync (ref.
no. 3) that converts the data message into HL7 format.
The HL7 message is transmitted in the LAN (ref. no. 4) to
CIS.
Using the patient ID the CIS maps the received patient
data to the corresponding patient record.

May 2022 SE-171.54 Solna, Sweden
www.getinge.com
3.3.1.2 Patient location mode
In this mode the MSync is mounted permanent in a
location, e.g. an operating room (ref. no 1). The data
transfer from MSync is started when a new case is
started on the Getinge device (no PC login needed).
MSync converts the data message into HL7
format. The HL7 message, that is transferred via the
LAN (ref. no. 2) includes a Location ID (OR1 in the
example to the right), which is mapped to the correct
patient in the CIS.

Note: One MSync per bed location is required.

3.3.2 Data forwarding mode

The third operation mode is Data forwarding mode.
In this mode the MSync only acts as an USB to
RS232 adapter: between the USB port on a Getinge
Cardiohelp device and the RS232 port on a serial to
ethernet converter (also called Medical Device
Integration or MDI). The data is eventually
transmitted to the CIS via the LAN.
In Data forwarding mode there is no conversion to
HL7 messages.

Note: The receiving system CIS must have drivers

that can handle the protocol from the Getinge
device.

4 Software architecture
4.1 General
MSync is delivered with two preinstalled softwares
 MSync SW
 Mirth Connect SW
Both these softwares are needed for the conversion
from serial protocol to an HL7 message. Configuration
of these softwares are described later on in this
document.

Page 9 of 88 Maquet Critical Care AB Not all products are available

www.getinge.com
4.2 MSync software
The Msync software is developed by Getinge and
includes a driver that can interpret serial protocol from
Getinge medical devices. How communication between
the Msync and Getinge device is established depends on
to which Getinge device the Msync is connected to.
For Flow/Servo, the Msync SW is sending commands to
the Getinge device and is thereafter receiving clinical
serial data. This process is shown in the picture to the
right.
For Cardiohelp/ HCU40 clinical serial data is
continuously sent after making a setting on the
Cardiohelp/HCU40. The Msync is listening to this data,
without needing to send commands.
Clinical data, time stamp and patient identifier
(configuration data) are sent, in an intermediate file
format, to the Mirth Connect SW.

4.3 Mirth Connect software

The Mirth Connect SW is an open-source software that
converts the output data from the MSync SW into HL7
messages. The clinical data that is delivered from the
Getinge device is eventually delivered to the CIS.

8 Channel descriptions
8.1 General
This chapter describes the correlation between the input
serial data to MSync from the Getinge device and the HL7
message that is output from MSync. The information in
the chapter is used for mapping selected channels to the
hospital CIS. This mapping is normally performed by the
hospital´s IT staff together with clinicians and application
specialists.
The message output from MSync is formatted using the
standard ISO 11073-10101:2004.
MSync is intended for the following Getinge devices:
Getinge device Protocol
Servo ventilator systems SCI and CIE
Flow anesthesia systems FCI
Cardiohelp System CSE
Heater-Cooler Unit HCU 40 HEP
Handshaking is performed to establish communication
using the highest common protocol supported by both the
MSync and the Getinge device.
Protocol Highest supported protocol version

8.7.2 Asynchronous messages
Asynchronous data is event data that is communicated when the event occurs. It has either numerical or enumerated
values. In the case of enums each enum has an individual CODE value. The event id refers to the event id defined in the
[ALARMTABLE].
 HEP Event ID
 REFID and CODE refer to the context sensitive ID in the message, see also ISO 11073-10101.
 ENUM Value
 UNIT shows which unit is used for each parameter.
