PW1100 Shaft Eddy Current Evaluation

Personnel Requirements
• Personnel performing this inspection shall be certified as a Level 2 or 3 in accordance with NAS410.
• Personnel performing this inspection shall receive practical training in the use of this procedure
and must demonstrate proficiency in calibration of the equipment, inspection of hardware, and
the evaluation of indications, before the authority to accept and reject hardware is delegated.

Required Equipment
1. Nortec 500 or equivalent
2. AF-5174 eddy current probe. (Figure 1)
3. Reference Standard. (Figure 2)
4. 16-pin Triax connector reflection cable or equivalent.

Calibration What thickness of tape, include in section 2

A. Cover the eddy current probe sensor with a smooth wrinkle free layer of Teflon tape. Tape
should be applied across the entire contact face of the probe. Trim any excess tape with a razor
blade.
B. Connect the probe to the Nortec 500 eddy current instrument.
C. Set the Nortec 500 to the following initial settings for calibration:

o Frequency: 500 kHz

o H Gain: 60 dB
o V Gain: 70 dB
o Angle: 260°
o Probe Drive: Mid
o Low pass Filter: 30 Hz
o High pass: 0 Hz
o Dot X-Position: 50
o Dot Y-Position: 60
o Auto-Erase: Off

D. Insert probe into reference standard and ensure it is not on a notch. Null the instrument.
E. Set index to 3 inches from the aft side. Rotate probe one complete revolution. Adjust angle and
gain settings to obtain an 80% peak to peak reading of the notch as shown in Figure 3.
This doesnt make sense to me looking a the diagram

Inspection
A. Calibrate instrument in accordance with 2.A through 2.I.
B. Insert probe into shaft and set index to 35 inches.
C. Rotate the probe 2 complete revolutions. CW or CCW
D. Insert probe one index position and rotate 2 complete revolution again.
E. Continue steps C and D until index reaches 45 inches.
F. Remove probe from shaft. Record any indications found.

Calibration Check.
A. After completion of the part inspection, or after intervals not to exceed 30 minutes, check the
calibration of the system.
(1) If the calibration repeats within plus or minus 5 percent of full screen amplitude
representative of 80 % or of the engraved value of the calibration standard, the test is
acceptable.
(2) If the amplitude of the response has increased by more than 5 percent recalibrate as
required, the test is acceptable.
(3) If the amplitude of the response has decreased by more than 5 % compared to 80 %,
repeat the calibration procedure and re-inspect all parts inspected since the previous
calibration.

Indication Evaluation.
A. Evaluate all the indications which are equal to or more than 60 percent full scale.
B. Check probe for missing Teflon tape or damage.
C. Check Probe Calibration per section 2.
(1) If the calibration repeats within zero/plus 5 percent, the probe calibration is considered as
acceptable.
(2) If the amplitude of the response has decreased, repeat the calibration procedure and re-
inspect all incriminated areas inspected since previous calibration.
(3) If the amplitude of the response representative has increased by more than 5 percent,
repeat the calibration procedure and re-inspect the incriminated areas previously found
rejectable.
relevant
(4) For all repeatable indications, record the amplitude and the incriminated location on the
appropriate inspection data sheet.
in·crim·i·nate
make (someone) appear guilty of a crime
Acceptation Rejection Criteria or wrongdoing; strongly imply the guilt of (someone).
A. After completion of the indication evaluation procedure, if the indication is equal to or more
than 80 percent full scale, reject the part.

80% FSH is a UT thing, ET it normally major screen divisions.

Not gonna break ouy a ruller, but is this
80% FSH, id look into "major division" or
something
