1. Purpose
A. This procedure is for measuring the nonconductive coating thickness on conductive nonmagnetic base
material.
2. General
A. This procedure is applicable only to eddy current procedures in part 6 that reqiure nonconductive coat-
ing thickness measurement or at any time during eddy current inspections to check apparent changes
in paint thickness. Determine the coating thickness and if reqiured, provide procedures for lift off com-
pensation or finish removal may be necessary before examining for flaws.
B. This inspection procedure must be done by qualified personnel in accordance with the General Sec-
tion (Part 6) of this manual.
A. The following inspection equipment and materials may be used for the completion of this procedure:

A. Identify the location of the area that is to be inspected. Refer to the specific procedure in part 6 of this
manual.
B. Clean the inspection areas clean with a cloth to remove dirt or grease. (See Figure 6-1 in the specific
procedures.)
5. Calibration Procedure
A. Connect the eddy current probe to the eddy current instrument. Use the manufacturer’s recommended
cable.
NOTE: The instrument settings shown in the table below are for reference and ease of the test
set-up. Each manufacturer’s instrument and probe combination will have different phase
and gain settings necessary for optimum operation and sensitivity.
INSTRUMENT SETTINGS
Phase 91
Gain Vertical 72
Gain Horizontal 49
D. Determine conductivity of the material to be examined when you refer to the applicable procedure in
part 6 of this manual. If the conductivity of the material is equal to or less than 35% IACS, use calibra-
tion standard P/N 23-55. If the conductivity is greater than 355 IACS, use calibration standard P/N
SRS 0824A/7075-T73.
F. If the probe has removable protective tape on the tip, remove the protective tape.

G. Put the probe on a notch free area of the calibration standard, a minimum of .25 inch away from the
corners and edges. Balance (null) the impedence plane instrument and adjust the instrument controls
(phase) to get a horizontal lift-off signal. Adjust the instrument horizontal position to the right side of the
screen. (See Figures 6-1 and 6-2.)
NOTE: It is important to keep the probe pressure consistent for each measurement. Variations in
the probe pressure will affect the precision of the measurement. Keep the probe perpen-
dicular to the surface at all times.
H. Put a .002”, .005” and .010” nonconductive shims on the calibration standard. Put the probe on each
shim individually.
I. Adjust the instrument controls (horizontal gain) to put the .010 inch shim on the screen. Note each
location on the CRT screen. (See Figure 6-3.) A different set of shims with different thicknesses can be
used if necessary.
NOTE: These locations can be marked on the CRT screen with a marker, such as a grease pen-
cil.
6. Inspection Procedure
A. Without nulling the instrument, put the eddy current probe on the inspection area. (Refer to the applica-
ble procedure in part 6 of this manual.)
B. Compare the inspection area thickness to the shim thickness on the CRT screen to find the noncon-
ductive coating (paint) thickness on the inspection area. (See Figure 6-4.)
C. Examine the nonconductive coating thickness at a minimum of five locations distributed equally along
the inspection area.
7. Acceptance/Rejection Criteria
A. If the inspection area coating thickness is .005 inch or less, no lift-off compensation is necessary.
B. If the inspection area coating thickness is greater than .005”, up to .010”, lift-off correction shims repre-
senting the actual coating thickness on the inspection area must be used with the reference standard
when calibrating for a flaw detection inspection.
C. If the inspection area coating thickness is greater than .010”, the coating must be reduced to meet one
of the two above conditions, or the coating must be removed. Refer to Maintenance Manual chapter
20.
