The Shared Leadership Initiative

Measurable Criteria

When a principal looks at hiring and filling roles for staff that are non-instructional and

support staff at school, it is important the principal list all the criteria that is needed to help

communicate the expectations of the job that will help the principal choose the best candidate for

the job. A person applying for the positions listed must have the knowledge to effectively do the

job at hand because they will be held responsible for that position. Many positions will provide

on-the-job training and support needed if that position allows it. Some jobs may have duty day

requirements, and having you work on weekends and holidays for those that are not instructional

staff, knowing that the staff is willing to make a commitment to the job helps make the decision

on who to hire easier.

Protocol

Once the principal has assigned a leader been a role, the principals must know that their

job is only beginning. The principal must stress accountability to their leaders on the campus and

remain involved in the plans for the schools, vision, culture, and progression. The leaders must

know they will be included in the staff monthly meeting to discuss the things going on with the

school, the leaders at the school that collaborate with each other will be encouraged to have their

own meeting so they can devise plans for growth. The observation process will be applied to

those chosen for leadership positions; the principal is responsible for their growth, which is why

it is important.

Strategies

As a leader the one thing that must be done is to plan and make sure that there is an active

agenda that the team is working to complete. Working with the music department opened my

eyes up to just how much they must collaborate to ensure success. Separating the band, chorus,

jazz, and classical teachers in groups and giving them a plan of action is what a great leader does.

Having a team that understands that working together and collaborating on projects will give

everyone a sense of what each other is doing, makes them a stronger leader in the end. Once all

teams have bought into the plan, beautiful music can be made.
