INTRODUCTION

This module provides the learners a complete understanding on the lessons for
the first quarter of the Grade 5-Science subject. It enriches the learner’s skills in
crafting, designing, creating, or performing a task that will let them apply in their daily
lives. Thus, the learners will be able to survive in these challenges in life.
The learners will perform the given task following the given instructions in this
module. They will be the one to perform it for it will let them develop their skills.
Learners must be careful in performing the given task. Learners should write their
answers / observations on the detachable forms in this module. You can ask your elder
siblings, guardians, and parents assistance if you find it difficult.
The facilitator / teacher provides an activity that is suited to the learner’s ability
in coping with the learned lessons. The materials to be used by the learners must be
available in the locality.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. identify the different liquids present at home and in the surroundings;
2. classify the different liquids present at home and in the surrounding as useful
and harmful;
3. design a product out of local, recyclable liquid materials in making useful
products; and
4. give importance of waste management in our day to day activities.

What I Need to Know

Quarter : First Quarter

Content Standard : The learners demonstrate understanding of the:
➢ properties of materials to determine whether they are useful
or harmful.
➢ materials undergo changes due to oxygen and heat
Performance Standard : The learners should be able to use local, recyclable
solid and/or liquid materials in making useful products.
Competency : The learners should be able to design a product out of local,
recyclable solid and/ or liquid materials in making useful
products. (S5MT-Ih-i-4)
Duration : 2 weeks (Week 5 & 6)

iv
Learning Objectives :

1. identify the different liquids present at home and in the surroundings;

2. classify the different liquids present at home and in the surroundings as useful
and harmful;
3. design a product out of local, recyclable liquid materials in making useful
products ; and
4. give importance of waste management in our day to day activities.

Topic : Making of Useful Products from Recyclable Liquid Materials

This part will let you carry out your learning in new settings and use this
creatively to produce something new, view things differently and reengineer
processes. You shall be involved in planning, designing, constructing, producing new
knowledge and / or inventing product which can contribute to the promotion of good
health and protection of the environment.

Come on kids, Let’s Learn it…

What Is it

Waste management (or waste disposal) include the

activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception
to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport,
treatment, and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and
regulation of the waste management process.
Waste can be solid, liquid, or gas and each type have
different methods of disposal and management. Waste
management deals with all types of waste, including industrial,
biological, and household. In some cases, waste can pose a threat
to human health. Waste is produced by human activity, for example,
the extraction and processing of raw materials. Waste management
is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on human health,
the environment or aesthetics.
Liquid waste can contaminate land and pollute waters. It can be defined as such
fluids as wastewater, fats, oils or grease (FOG), used oil, and hazardous household
liquids, to name a few. The Territory's landfills and transfer station do not accept liquid
waste of any type. Liquid waste can be divided into three main streams: sewerage,
trade waste and hazardous liquid waste. Sewage is a water-carried waste , in solution
or suspension, that is intended to be removed from a community.
Also known as domestic or municipal wastewater, it is characterized by volume
or rate of flow, physical condition, chemical and toxic constituents, and its bacteriologic
status (which organisms it contains and in what quantities). It consists mostly of
greywater (from sinks, tubs, showers, dishwashers, and clothes washers), blackwater
(the water used to flush toilets, combined with the human waste that it flushes away);
soaps and detergents; and toilet paper (less so in regions where bidets are widely used
instead of paper). Whether it also contains surface runoff depends on the design of
sewer system.
Trade waste means the liquid waste generated by any industry, business, trade,
or manufacturing process. It also includes wastewater contaminated with substances
like grease, oils, solids, and chemicals. Hazardous liquid waste is a waste with
properties that make it potentially dangerous or harmful to human health or the
environment.

Recycling is the process of collecting and processing materials that would
otherwise be thrown away as trash7and turning them into new products. Recycling
can benefit your community and the environment. There are some benefits in
recycling.

• Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators.

• Conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals
• Increases economic security by tapping a domestic source of
materials

Making new products out of recycled materials reduces the need to consume
precious resources.

Now, you know it already what is liquid

waste and recycling. List down 5 liquid
waste materials found in your home and
in the surroundings.

salt -get a toothpick/ wood
for wick making: part of the matchstick
toothpick/matchstick then roll cotton around
cotton the stick.
3. Fill the empty glass
with salt and used
cooking oil. Then put the
wick in the jar.
4. Refill used cooking oil
when the jar is empty.
Benefits to Health / Environment
- reduce the land and water pollutants
- inexpensive to be a source of light during brownout

Kids be cautious of the following:

1. Be careful in handling harmful/hazardous materials.
