School Based Management- Navotas National High School

Navotas National High School is a secondary high school in Navotas that was
founded by Mayor Victor Javier in 1983 to provide free and quality education to
students in Navotas. NNHS was then a mother school to several annexes namely,
Tulay Annex, San Roque Annex, Kaunlaran Annex, San Rafael Annex, Tanza Annex
and Tangos Annex who later then established as independent schools. Navotas
National High School still remains the main school of Navotas where a lot of students
preferred to enroll.Because of high enrollment rate, NNHS face a problem with its
facilities and teachers.

When Dr. Maria Cristina Robles became the school principal in 2008, she was
confronted with a large student population. With only 22 classrooms available for
4000 enrollee, the school has to have three shifting schemes with 80-90 students per
section that compromised the teachers’ morale and quality of education. Dr. Robles
found it necessary to find a way to combat under achievement of students. This gave
birth to different projects that Dr. Robles initiated.

First of is with the Project MCART, which means Mobile Computer Aided
Reinforcement for Teaching. This project aims to let teachers deliver instructions with
not just abstract ideas turned into knowledge but also to let students aim for
excellence. In this project, teachers are using technology in teaching their students,
they are using interactive lessons to get the interests of the students which makes them
strive to learn more. MCART have been constantly innovated through out the year as
well.

In line with MCART, Dr. Robles also initiated the M-ISOS wherein students
are only attending school 3 times a week and the 2 days are given to students to finish
the activities given to them with the guidance of their teachers. With this, we can see
that even before pandemic, Navotas National High School is already implementing
the blended type of teaching and also the use of technology in the teaching-learning
set up.

In 2016, Dr. Robles initiated the “Isang Nanay, Isang Gulay Project” which
targeted the parents’ involvement in school for their children. Each parent has to plant
a vegetable that they will turn in to school that will be used as a main ingredient for
the school’s feeding program. This not only promoted the parents’ involvement but
promotes the volunteerism and solved the five school gaps; security, sanitation and
cleanliness, food safety, gulayan sa paaralan and feeding program.

Project YSTAR and Project LSET were also launched to Navotas Natiional
High School that promoted and encouraged students and teachers to do action
research. Dr. Robles spearheaded some seminars for teachers to encourage them and
let them know the importance of action research in schools.
Dr. Maria Cristina Robles not just solved Navotas National High School’s
problems but imparted the knowledge and skills that she has, which was recognized
not just nationally but also internationally. She continually promotes the importance
of action research in school management to improve the quality of education.
