Assignment 1
1. Explain with the aid of a block diagram the electromechanical energy system indicating
the flow of energy in the conversion of energy. [6 marks]
2. Electromechanical energy conversion takes place through electric fields or magnetic
field as the medium. Although the various conversion devices operate on common set
of physical principles, the structures of the devices depend on their function. State two
examples of each of the following classes of electromechanical energy conversion
devices:
i. Transducers
ii. Force-producing devices
iii. Continuous energy conversion devices [6 marks]
3. Derive an expression for field energy in a singly excited electromechanical unit.
[8 marks]

Due date: 31/03/2022 (10:00 hours).

Assignment 2
1. Explain with the aid of circuit arrangements the following methods of starting squirrel
cage induction motors:
a. Direct on Line (D.O.L.) Starter [3 marks]
b. Stator Resistance (or Reactance) Starter [3 marks]
c. Star-Delta Starter [3 marks]
d. Auto-transformer Starter [3 marks]
2. A three-phase, 400V, 6-pole, 50Hz, induction motor develops mechanical power of
20kW at 985 rev/min. Neglecting mechanical loss and assuming the stator losses to be
equal to 1,800W, calculate the total input power and the speed at which the induction
motor is running. [8 marks]
