QUESTION 1

a) Briefly describe two (2) advantages of an AC system compared to that of the DC


(4 marks)

b) Figure Q1b shows a one-line diagram of a power system containing a 480 V generator and
two loads. Assume the transmission lines are loseless, calculate the following:
i) The phase voltage and phase current in Load A
ii) The phase voltage and phase current in Load B
iii) Tthe real and reactive power of load A and load B.
iv) The real, reactive and apparent power of the generator.
v) The total line current, IL

c) Describe three (3) basic how magnetic fields are used.

QUESTION 2
a) A single phase, 100kVA, 1000V/100V, 50Hz transformer gave the following test results:

open-circuit test (from secondary side): 100V, 6.0A, 400W


short-circuit test (from primary side): 50V,100A,1800W
Based on the data above, determine the following:

i) The approximate equivalent circuit referred to the primary side.


ii) Volatge regulation at full load, 0.6 leading power factor.

b) Describe the two (2) types of losses that occur in a transformer.

QUESTION 3

a) Describe two (2) types of rotor construction of a three-phase induction motor.

(4 marks)

b) A three-phase, 80hp, 400V, 50 Hz 6-pole star-connected squirrel cage induction motor has
the following parameters referred to the stator:

𝑅 0.12 𝛺 𝑅 0.1 𝛺 𝑋 0.5 𝛺 𝑋 8𝛺

Using approximate equivalent circuit, find the following at 6 % slip :

i) The Rotor Speed


ii) Line Current
iii) The Power Factor
iii) The Power Delivered to Stator

c) Describe two (2) basic approaches to start a synchronous motor.

QUESTION 4

a) A three-phase 480V, 50Hz, 6-pole, delta-connected, synchronous generator has per-phase


synchronous reactance of 1.0 Ω and an armature resistance of 0.015 Ω. At full load, the
machine supplies 1200 A at 0.8 lagging power factor. This generator has friction and windage
losses of 1.0 kW and core losses of 0.5 kW.
i. The speed of rotation of the generator (in rad/s)
ii. The amount of armature current in the machine
iii. The internal generated voltage (EMF) of this generator at full load?
iv. The efficiency of this generator when it is operating at the rated current and 0.8 lagging
power factor.

b) A 200V DC shunt motor has motor armature, Ra = 0.1 Ω and field resistance, Rf = 240 Ω. The
rotational losses are given at 236 W. At full load, the line current is 9.8 A with the motor running
at 1450 rpm. Determine:
i. The mechanical power developed
ii. The output power
iii. The load torque
iv. Full load efficiency

c) Explain the principle of armature winding and show the two (2) basic possibility armature
winding arrangement samples

QUESTION 5

a) A single-phase induction motor, ¼ hp, 120 V, 50 Hz, 3 % slip and of 0.85 lagging power factor
has the following equivalent circuit parameter
𝑃 350 𝑊
𝑃 15 𝑊
𝑍 10 𝑗12Ω
𝑍 0.5 𝑗1.2 Ω

Calculate the following:


i) Input Current
ii) Input power
iii) The mechanical powers developed by the forward and backward

b) One of the most common uses for the diode is to rectify the AC voltage into a DC power supply.
Sketch the half-wave rectifier circuit, then draw the ac input voltage and DC output voltage.

c) Failure of insulation is the most common cause of problems in electrical equipment. Discuss
four (4) main causes of insulation loss.
(8 marks)
