The International Student Exchange Support Programme 2019

(Short Stay Programme)
IOE-Waseda University (Japan)

Waseda University in Tokyo, one of the UCL IOE’s flagship international partners, has
announced scholarships of 80,000 Yen (around £530) to help IOE masters and doctoral
students spend eight days in Tokyo studying the Japanese education system.

Scholarships are open to all registered masters and research degree students at the IOE who
can meet the remaining cost of the trip to Tokyo, and who are prepared to submit an
application for the scholarship by the deadline of Monday 23 September, 2019.

Applications will be assessed by a panel of judges at the IOE and Waseda. The programme itself
runs in Tokyo from Monday, 25 November to Monday, 2 December, 2019.

This is an outstanding opportunity to study the Japanese education sector and to engage with
one of Japan's premier universities.

1. The benefits
- Waseda is a world-class university. Studying there, even for a short period, is highly
prestigious – especially as the recipient of a Japanese Government scholarship.
- For those interested in education in Japan, in comparing systems, or in Asian culture more
broadly, this is an excellent chance to learn more.
- This will also be a great opportunity to network with colleagues in Japan, and to get to
know fellow IOE students during the travel period.

2. Overview of the programme

Dates: Monday, 25 November to Monday, 2 December, 2019
Programme content (Tentative):
(1) Lectures on Japanese education and teaching methods
(2) Visits to Japanese schools
(3) Interviews with Japanese junior or senior high school teachers
(4) Individual supervision by Waseda faculty members and/or participation in their

supervision are advised to contact relevant supervisors at Waseda in advance.
Prof Tetsuo Harada tharada@waseda.jp at Waseda can advise on this.

serious impact on the process of scholarship allocation to other students as well as the
next year’s scholarship allotment to the university.
