TALENT SHOW

MATTER
RABY : Hello guys! Right now, I’m playing with slime~
ELDIYA : Hey Raby! What are you doing?
RABY : Hey Eldiya! I’m playing with slime.
ELDIYA : Oh!
RABY : Eldiya, do you ever wonder, is slime is solid, or liquid?
ELDIYA : Why do you ask?
RABY : Because, it drips like a liquid. But, when I punch it, it looks like a solid.
ELDIYA : Good question! Let’s ask professor Azlina. She can help us to explain the answer.
NANA : Hi, everyone! Hi Raby and Eldiya.
RABY & ELDIYA : Hi, prof!
ELDIYA : Prof, I am looking for the answer. Is slime is solid, or liquid?
NANA : Well, before I answer to that, let me ask you? Do you guys know, what is ‘Matter’?
RABY : Hmmm... I know prof! I have learnt this one before. It is in the science form 1
textbook. The theme is exploration of elements in nature. And the learning area is ‘Matter’.
So, ‘Matter’ is everything. Which is mass and occupies space.
ELDIYA : ‘Matter’ is made out of many fine and tiny discrete particle, we may determine
the state of ‘Matter’ by the arrangement of particle.
NANA : So, I am ‘Matter’, you guys are ‘Matter’ too.
ELDIYA : Yes, prof! There are three states of ‘Matter’. Solid like this ice. It very cool.
RABY : Liquid, like this water.
NANA : And another one is gas. Now, the balloon is full of air which has gas inside. Look.
ELDIYA: But... why there are three states of ‘Matter’?
NANA : It is because, particles in solid, liquid and gas are different. For example, solid, like
this thing, has particles that keep shape and volume. This is also keep its shape and volume.
Now, let’s see how the particles are arranged in solid. First, take a clear box and put the small
balls inside the clear box. Hmm... what do you see, Eldiya?
ELDIYA: Particles do not move free. Attraction forces are strong. And it vibrate, and spin at
fixed position.
RABY : Liquid, however have particles that are free to move around. Attraction forces are
weaker. The particles collide with each other. For example, this liquid here. What will
happen?
ELDIYA : So, it’s been that liquid even in different shape and still keep the same volume.
NANA : That’s right, Eldiya. Now, let’s talk about gas. Gas has particles that is so loose, that
has no fixed shape or volume. Particles more freely and randomly. Attraction forces are
weak. Particles move in very high speed. So, this is the dry ice and I’m going to pour in some
hot water. But first, don’t forget your safety goggles. Guys, let’s do a countdown together,
starting from three. Ready?
ALL : Three, two, one!
RABY & ELDIYA : Wow, so amazing!
NANA : It produces carbon dioxide gas. It just go up everywhere and fill up the entire place.
ELDIYA : But what happened to this slime? Is this a solid or is this a liquid?
NANA : Well, before I explain what is that, let us make a special slime called Oobleck. What
you need is cornstarch, food colouring and water. Mix it up together and you will get
Ooblecks. Wow, this is really cool. If we pick it up, it looks like liquid.
ELDIYA : But, what happen if we punch it?
ELDIYA : Wow, it so hard!
RABY : What’s going on prof? Is Oobleck like slime? Is it liquid? Or is it solid?
NANA : This is a special kind. It is called, non-Newtonian liquid.
ELDIYA : What is non-Newtonian liquid?
NANA : It can behave like solid when pressure is applied like this. But, it can also behave
like liquid when no pressure is applied. Pretty cool stuff, huh? So, to recap what we have
learnt today, there are three states of matter. Solid, liquid, and gas.
ELDIYA : Solid has fixed volume and fixed shape.
RABY: Liquid has fixed volume but not fixed shape, but may according to this shape of
container.
ELDIYA : And the last one, gas. The gas in the balloon does not have fixed volume and
fixed shape. Now, let the gas in the balloon go.
RABY : Wow! The gas was spread and take the shape of the insider place.
NANA : So, Raby. Do you know what are the importance of ‘Matter’ in our daily lives and
environment?
RABY : Hmm... I know prof. ‘Matter’ isn’t something that only exist in a lab. We comes into
concept of it, hundreds of types everyday. Everything that we hold, taste or smell is made of
‘Matter’. ‘Matter’ makes up everything you can see. Including clothes, food, water plus
animals.
ELDIYA : It even make up something you can not see. Such as air on the scent of perfume.
ALL : Mmm...
NANA : That’s right Eldiya and Raby. ‘Matter’ is made of many tiny discrete of particles,
that only the most powerful microscope can see them.
RABY & ELDIYA : Oooo, now we get it.
ALL : Do you guys get it?
NANA : That’s all from us.
RABY : I’m Raby.
ELDIYA : I’m Eldiya.
NANA : I’m Nana. And we are-
ALL : The little scientist!
