(ARA) - Pink. Blue. Yellow. No, these are
not just colors; these are sweeteners that
dominate the sugar substitute market.
More specifcally, these are examples
of artifcial sweeteners that are favored
by millions of Americans. A growing
demand for choice, however, means
there is a new group in the sweetener
club - natural sweeteners.
Natural sweeteners are commonly
understood as sweeteners that are
derived from plants, fruits or vegetables
and contain no artifcial or synthetic
components. Some are low in calories;
some are not.
For people looking for new ways to
sweeten and enjoy their favorite foods,
however, they can be a great option,
says nutrition expert and Registered
Dietician, Molly Kimball. They taste
delicious and are easy to incorporate
into any lifestyle.
Natural sweeteners really do get their
start in nature. Take Truvia(R), a popu-
lar, zero-calorie natural sweetener, for
example. Truvia(R) is the brand name
for rebiana, a natural sweetener derived
from the stevia plant.
The stevia plant was discovered more
than 200 years ago in South America
and has been used as a sweetener in
various parts of the world for more than
three decades. To make the sweetener,
the leaves are harvested and dried, and
then steeped in fresh water in a process
similar to that of making tea. This
unlocks the best-tasting part of the leaf,
which is then further purifed so it is
ready for use in foods.
In line with recent food trends, consum-
ers are demanding more natural prod-
ucts - naturally sweetened, naturally
favored and the like. Brands responded
with entire lines of naturally sweetened
goods using sweeteners like Truvia(R)
rebiana.
Natural sweeteners are easier to
fnd than most people think, says
Kimball. It is impossible to walk down
the grocery aisle and not see new,
naturally sweetened varieties of well-
known brands. Take new Crystal Light
Pure, for example. Its sweetened with
sugar and Truvia(R) rebiana, making
it a great choice for someone looking
for a naturally sweetened, low-calorie
beverage. Crystal Light Pure contains
15 calories and 4 grams of sugar per 8
fuid-ounce serving.
In the end, it all comes back to
consumer choice and consumers are
reaching for natural sweeteners.

(ARA) - It may not feel like winter yet, but cold weather is around
the corner. Take advantage of the good weather now by following
these tips to prepare the outside and inside of your home to survive
the winter months ahead.
Outside tips
* After a summer of caring for your lawn, you might be looking
for a break, but make sure you dont stop mowing too soon. Lawns
should be mowed well into the fall, even after growing stops. Grass
should be at least 3 inches high and clippings should be raked up
and bagged on the last mowing of the season to prevent roots being
smothered over the winter.
* If you planted perennials, check with your local garden center
about what type of protection particular plants require depending
on where you live. Gardeners in Minnesota will face much differ-
ent winter weather than someone in Virginia. Protecting with extra
mulch or soil will help in some places, while others may require
covering the plants with burlap, canvas or any other porous fabric. If
you have trees that come near a power line, the branches should be
trimmed back in the event of ice storms or heavy snowfalls that can
cause trees to fall.
* Companies like TimberTech manufacture composite decking,
railing, and fence products that require less maintenance than
traditional treated wood. While no product is maintenance free,
low maintenance decking means less work for you to prepare your
deck for the winter. Whether your deck is treated wood or composite
wood, keeping a clean, dry deck surface is the key to longer deck life
and enjoyment. Just as you would rake the leaves from the lawn,
sweep the leaves, needles and branches from the deck and remove
all smaller debris from between deck boards as proper drainage
is important to avoiding moisture build up. You can also use a
deck cleaner and power washer to eliminate build-up. If you have
a treated-wood deck, make sure you seal or stain the deck to keep
water from getting in.
If you live in a cold weather climate where ice and snow are a factor,
use calcium chloride or rock salt to melt the ice and snow on your
deck. When shoveling snow off of the deck, run the shovel lengthwise
on the deck boards. Shoveling cross-wise can scratch or cut into the
planks.
* Storing deck furniture depends on what type of furniture you
have. Wood furniture needs to be treated and covered with a
protective, waterproof cover. Folding deck chairs can be easily
stored in basements, garages or sheds, while covers are available
for most size tables.
* If youve got a snowblower, make sure its tuned up and ready to
go; if you have a lawnmower, make sure you run it down or drain
all the fuel out of it. Fuel in a mower or snowblower should be fresh
when you start the season.
* If you have cracks in your driveway or sidewalks, make sure they
are repaired before the snow starts. The thawing and refreezing of
snow can cause signifcant damage when it gets into cracks.
Indoor tips
* The more cold air you keep out, the less heat youll have to use
to warm your house. If you have drafty windows, consider wrap-
ping them with plastic to help save energy and keep the cold air out
of your house. Another way to keep the heat in is to caulk around
windows and door frames where air may leak into the house, and
add weather stripping or replace weather stripping that may have
worn down.
* If you have a freplace, make sure it is capped to keep birds and
rodents out. Firewood should also be stored away from your house
as it can become a home for mice.
* Heating accounts for 34 percent of utility usage, according to the
Environmental Protection Agency, so checking your ducts to make
sure they are sealed is a great way to save money by increasing the
effciency of your furnace. Other ways to make sure you are heat-
ing your home effciently is by making sure your furnace is tuned
up and installing a programmable thermostat that can be set to
regulate your homes temperature without you having to remember
to do it yourself.
Following these tips can help you save money in the short and long
term as you get ready to welcome the winter to your outdoor and
indoor spaces.

I Will Not Fear My Childrens Math Homework
AKA The New Math Rules Moms and Dads Need to Know.
Math is the universal language among societies. Excelling in math is fundamental in order for your chil-
dren to fnd success in life. It is also one of those subjects that often strikes fear and feelings of inadequacy
in the hearts of children and parents. Too often math homework stirs up unnecessary tears and frustration
unheard of with other subjects.
As a learning specialist and a parent to a daughter, parents often approach me with concerns about how to
raise their childrens math achievement. They want to support their children at home, but do not know how.
They need guidance and advice. Many parents feel inadequate helping their children with math homework
because they struggled with mathematics as students themselves.
I am here to say: You can do it. Your child can do it. Rest assured, with persistent effort and a few funda-
mentals, children can make signifcant gains in math and increase their confdence in the process. Whether
it is improving test scores or merely avoiding the nightly meltdown at the kitchen table, here are four rules
to live by. Use these tips to help you and your children enjoy and succeed with math at home.
Rule 1: Math is for everyone.
Repeat after me: everyone is capable of doing math. If your child feels frustrated, they are less available to
learn. Redefne success for them. Focus on praising their effort and willingness to take on math challenges,
rather than their ability to always come up with the correct answer. Help them to fnd joy in the process of
solving a problem. You are removing the risk of failure, and thereby allowing them to be comfortable to try
their best.
Rule 2: Math is everywhere.
Math is accessible at all times. Use everyday objects, such as a group of coins, to help children practice
their skills, such as skip counting (being able to count by numbers such as 2s, 5s and 10s.) Before you
know it, they have learned a fundamental precursor for multiplication.
Rule 3: Math is memory.
Experts agree that providing a framework or organizational structure for numbers is the best way to help
children remember them, a critical skill for mathematical competence. The best approaches and educa-
tional tools stress developing a mental number line that helps kids keep the sequencing of numbers intact.
At the same time, they understand how numbers relate to each other and become fexible thinkers.
Rule 4: Math is Connections.
Ultimately, your child will need to see math as a collection of nested ideas (for instance how multiplication
is repeated addition) to achieve mathematical competence. Let children know that they should build upon
what they already know. Have dinner conversations about what the days topics remind them of.
Matthew Mandelbaum and Jamie Cohen are learning specialists and are the creators of Jumping Joeys
Number Line. Jumping Joeys Number Line is an innovative, child-centered, multi-sensory arithmetic
learning system for Pre-K through Elementary. Jumping Joeys Number Line fosters enjoyable, engaging,
effective and effcient mathematical experiences, where students are motivated and build a strong math
foundation with long-term understanding. Students feel successful and excited about learning opportuni-
ties, and confdent in their emerging abilities. www.jumpingjoeysnumberline.com
