Use Resources such as Dictionary, Thesaurus, Online Sources to Find the Meaning of
Words

Background Information for Learners


A variety of print and electronic resources can serve as a guide to help you understand and find the
meaning of words. These resources are the following:
Dictionary- a reference book that contains words listed in alphabetical order and gives information about the
words’ meanings, forms, pronunciations, etc.
Thesaurus is a book that gives the synonyms and antonyms of a word. Aside from synonyms and antonyms, a
thesaurus also gives the meaning and parts of speech of a word.
Examples of synonyms: Example of antonyms:
1. cold-freezing 1. young-old
2. large-big 2. day-night

Online sources- is a material you find online. Examples of this are web pages and documents on the internet
that provides useful information.
