Entry to Grammar Schools in Wandsworth

Introduction

Grammar schools in the Wandsworth Consortium are

preferred by many local parents because of their focus
on academic success. The consortium uses a common
entrance exam for all its schools, so students only need
to take one test, even if they apply to several schools
within the partnership.

The consortium aims to keep the selection process the

same for all its grammar schools. It, therefore, uses
shared resources, knowledge and administrative efforts
to offer equal learning opportunities to students from
various backgrounds.

Which schools are part of the

Wandsworth Consortium?

The Wandsworth Consortium is made up of the

following schools:

⦿ Graveney School
⦿ Burntwood School

⦿ Ashcroft Technology Academy

Students at these schools perform well in their exams,

showcasing their strong academic abilities. This
consistent level of achievement enables a smooth
transition into higher education, providing a variety of
opportunities for them to explore different study areas.

Read on to learn more about their exam and

the facilities, meetings with key members of staff and an
address from the Head.

results are communicated in the following month.
Pupils who are applying for a specialist aptitude place
must also sit an aptitude test. More details about this

Wandsworth Schools, Year 6

Test, 11 Plus (11+) Exam Format

The Wandsworth Year 6 Test is designed to provide the

Wandsworth schools with an indication of a student’s
academic ability. The test is prepared by GL Assessment
and has two parts:

⦿ A Verbal Reasoning section, lasting 50 minutes

⦿ A Non-Verbal Reasoning section, lasting 55 minutes

There will be a short practice session before each test

and a break between the two parts. For both sections,
students are given a pre-printed answer sheet to
complete, laid out in a similar format to a multiple-
choice test. There is no extended writing involved.

Scores are marked electronically and are age-

standardised to ensure that older students don’t have an
unfair advantage. More information on the Wandsworth
Year 6 Test is provided on the Local Authority website.

Pass Marks and Target Scores
★ REVIEWS

The Year 6 Test held at Wandsworth grammar schools is

highly competitive. Scores can’t be expressed in
percentages, as they are age-standardised to ensure fair
admissions. The minimum and maximum standardised
score for each test is 69 and 141 respectively.

Pupils who are able to score 75-85%+ consistently in

our 11+ practice tests should be on track to pass the
Wandsworth Year 6 Test.

Whilst there are no guarantees, this has historically

been a fairly strong indicator that your child should do
well in the Wandsworth 11+ exam.

Passing the test does not guarantee that your child will
be offered a place. It simply means they have surpassed
the required threshold. As such, it makes sense to aim
for as high a score as possible.

Don’t worry if your child is not scoring well in our

practice papers from the outset. With targeted practice
and focus, it’s possible to make big improvements in a
short amount of time!

Wandsworth Grammar School

Consortium – Progress 8 Scores

The Progress 8 score serves as a method to track

students’ academic growth from the end of Key Stage 2
in primary school to the end of Key Stage 4 in secondary
school. It serves as a gauge for a school’s educational
performance by monitoring the academic progress of its
students.

To determine a school’s Progress 8 score, students’

actual grades in eight key subjects, such as English,
maths, sciences, humanities and languages, are
compared with their projected grades, which are based
on their earlier academic performance at primary level.
This score represents the average academic progress
students make across these subjects.

Please refer to the chart below for details on

Progress 8 scores at grammar schools in the
Wandsworth Consortium:

Source: Gov.uk

A positive Progress 8 score indicates that students, on

average, have made more progress than expected, while
a negative score suggests that they have made less
progress than expected. A score of zero means that
students have progressed as expected.
