MASTER OF SCIENCE IN BIOINFORMATICS (3895)

B.325 ADMISSION

Unless Senate decides otherw ise and subject to Rule A.2.4, a student shall be required to meet
the follow ing criteria to be enrolled for the Master of Science in Bioinform atics Degree - MSc
(Bioinform atics):

B.325.1 an applicant should be in possession of a Bachelor of Science Honours degree w ith an


average of at least 60%in a related scientific subject area.

B.325.2 an applicant w ith an undergraduate degree or diploma (M+3) having at least 3-5 years
relevant experience may be considered.

B.325.3 an applicant w ho has show n significant potential, but did not achieve an average of
60% may be considered by the Departmental Postgraduate Committee. The applicant
may be required to w rite a w ell motivated essay on bioinformatics and his/her role and
expectations from the programme. An applicant may be interview ed by the
Departmental Postgraduate Committee.

B.325.4 Departmental approval is subject to the availability of a supervisor.

B.326 SELECTION

Final selection shall be based on an applicant meeting the criteria as determined by the Faculty.

B.327 DURATION

Unless Senate decides otherw ise, the minimum duration of the curriculum for full-time shall be
one year or tw o years for part-time.

B.329 ASSESSMENT

Assessment is governed by Rule A.5 as stipulated in the University Calendar: General Information
Part 1.

B.330 PROGRESSION RULES

Registration for the follow ing year of study shall be recommended by the supervisor if in his/her
opinion adequate progress has been made during the current year.

B.331 RENEWAL OF REGISTRATION

Renew al of registration shall be governed by Rule A.4, as stipulated in the University Calendar:
General Information Part 1 or as provided for in the faculty rules as contained in this Calendar.

B.332 SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMME

B.332.1 A thesis dealing w ith an original research topic must be presented.

B.332.2 Coursew ork may be included, as recommended by the Departmental Postgraduate


Committee, as a component of the programme w hen deemed necessary.
