B. Directions: Choose any of the two (2) word problems involving conic section to solve. Show your
solution or the process on how you get your answer as a way of defending or reasoning out.
a. A cell phone tower is designed to service a 12-mile radius. What is the standard equation of the outer
boundary of the region serviced by the tower if the tower is located at (4, -1) on a coordinate plane?
b. The water issuing from the end of a horizontal pipe 6 meters above the ground forms a parabolic curve.
The vertex is located at the end of the pipe. At point 4 meters below the line of the pipe, the flow of the
water has curved outward 5 meters beyond the vertical line through the end of the pipe. What is the
standard form of the equation of the parabola that represents the flow of the water?
c. A narrow arch supporting a stone bridge is in the shape of half ellipse and is 18 meters long and 7
meters high. A person standing at one focus of the ellipse throws a rubber ball against the arch. No
matter what direction the ball is thrown, it always bounces off the arch once and strikes the same point
on the ground (the other focus). Find the eq2uation of the ellipse that supports the stone bridge.
d. A hyperbolic mirror is used in some telescopes. Such a mirror has the property that a light ray directed at
one focus will be reflected to the other focus. What is the equation to model the hyperbolic mirror’s
surface below?
