• FORMAL LANGUAGE

Formal language is used in formal or serious situations, such as interacting with older people or
people we don't know, people in high positions, and in business contexts. Examples are in applying
for jobs, writing business letters, business memos, formal reports, meetings, discussions in seminars
or conferences. The importance of formal language in these situations is to demonstrate expertise
and knowledge in a particular field, as well as giving the right impression. Formal language does not
use colloquialisms, contractions or first person pronouns such as “I” or “We.”

• INFORMAL LANGUAGE

The word informal or casual is often used in everyday life. Informal language refers to language such
as meetings, situations, clothing, and language. Informal language is defined as language used in
informal situations that is more relaxed and spontaneous. Apart from that, informal forms of
language can be spoken or written. In spoken language, informal language is used in conversations
with friends and family. Meanwhile, in written form, informal language is usually used to send
messages to friends or family, write postcards, write personal emails, or write statuses on social
media. The tone of informal language is more personal than formal language. Informal language is
impulsive, improvisational, direct, and personal to some degree. This type of language tends to be
simpler and shorter. Therefore, using casual language will save you more time. Using casual language
conveys a sense of familiarity and trust to your listeners, making them feel more comfortable.

Use formal language when dealing with the following situations:

a. When you talk to a stranger or new acquaintance

b. When talking to an older person or a figure

c. When speaking in official forums such as meetings, ceremonies or speeches

d. When writing scientific articles, theses, dissertations

e. When creating a business proposal to submit

Use informal language when dealing with situations like the following:

a. Meeting with friends

b. Talk to relatives like siblings

c. Meeting old friends

d. When you are in a relaxed situation
