WORKSHEET 5:
TECHNOLOGY AS A WAY OF REVEALING
OVERVIEW
This worksheet will focus on the essence of technology and the relationship
between humans and technology according to the view of Martin Heidegger from his
lecture entitled “The Question Concerning Technology”, delivered in 1953 to the Bavarian
Academy of Fine Arts and published the year after.

EXPLAIN
After reading Martin Heidegger’s lecture and the video about the four causes,
answer the questions below to gauge your understanding.
Heidegger points out, technological objects are means for ends, and are built and
operated by human beings, but the essence of technology is something else entirely. Just
as the essence of a tree is not itself a tree, Heidegger points out, so the essence of
technology is not anything technological.
The three (3) definitions of technology as mentioned by Heidegger are a way of
revealing, transforms humanity itself into standing-reserve and we are questioning
concerning technology in order to bring to light our relationship to its essence.
3. Explain the concept of Poiesis and identify the four (4) causes using the
process ofphotosynthesis.
Poeisis means "bringing forth." Heidegger distinguishes between two forms of
bringing forth. The first is directly associated with poeisis, as it is the bringing forth into
existence that the craftsperson and the poet (and anyone who produces things) practice.
1. Material cause: The substance or material that was utilized to create anything
is referred to here. The material causes of the process of photosynthesis are
carbon dioxide and sunlight that are absorbed by the plant.
2. Formal cause: This refers to the configuration or shape that anything takes on.
In a formal sense, the source of photosynthesis would be the chemical processes
that occur inside the plant to synthesize glucose from light and carbon dioxide.
3. Efficient cause: This term is used to describe outside influences or acts that aid
in the creation of something. The various proteins and enzymes involved in the
chemical reactions that lead to the generation of glucose during photosynthesis
would be considered the real cause of the phenomenon.
4. Final cause: This is used to describe a thing's ultimate goal or intention. The
end cause of photosynthesis would be the creation of glucose, which provides the
plant with energy.
Continue reading pages 6-11 of the lecture of Martin Heidegger to get a deeper
understanding of the concept of “Enframing”. Then work as a group to compare and
contrast through a ppt presentation the concept of modern technology, “challenges forth”
and pre-modern technology, “brings forth”. Outputs will be presented in our face-to-face
class. Please use the rubric below as your guide.
EVALUATE
Create a comic strip with 6 panels on the topic, “Dangers of Modern Technology.”
Place your outputs in an A4 sized paper and upload it on our MS Teams in pdf format.
Use the rubric below as your guide.
