Definition of Terms

For a better understanding of this study, the following terms are defined in the context

of this research.

Academic performance. Refers to the level of achievement and success. The students

demonstrate in their academic subjects, that are measured by grades, test scores, or other

indicators of learning and progress.

Abstraction. A conceptual process wherein general rules and concepts are derived from

the usage and classification of specific examples, literal (real or concrete) signifiers, first

principles, or other methods. In the context of this study, it figures out how to work with the

different parts efficiently and accurately when solving a problem.

Algorithmic thinking. Algorithmic thinking is a derivative of computer science and the

process of developing code and program applications. In algorithmic thinking, students endeavor

to construct a step-by-step process for solving a problem and like problems so that the work is

replicable by humans or computers.

Decomposition. Refers to the state or process of rotting; decay. In mathematics, it is a

process of breaking down a problem into a number of smaller problems that can more easily be

addressed.

Computational Skills. Defined as the ability to calculate basic addition, subtraction,

multiplication, and division problems quickly and accurately. It refers to the selection and

application of arithmetic operations to calculate solutions to mathematical problems.

Pre-calculus. Is a course, or a set of courses, that includes algebra and trigonometry at a

level that is designed to prepare students for the study of calculus.

Pattern recognition. Refers to the automated recognition of patterns and regularities in

data. It uses the identification of similarities within a particular data set or sequence to simplify

the understanding and resolution of a problem or goal.
