Purpose of this document:

The purpose of this document is to educate and empower the Muslim community, equipping
them with the knowledge, understanding and confidence to book Umrah without requiring
the services of travel agents or external parties, should they wish to do so.

In this document, we will cover the benefits of booking with and without an agent, as well as
all logistical aspects, ranging from topics such as visas, flights, hotels, transport, food etc.

Why are we sharing this information?

Alhamdullilah (Praise be to God), with the blessing of Allah, we have been provided with the
opportunity of completing Umrah multiple times, even more so recently whilst we have been
living in Jeddah for work purposes.
We realised many people were unaware of how easy it is to book Umrah without using travel
agents, and that this gap in information needed to be bridged for the benefit of the Muslim
community.

Below we have listed some benefits of booking with and without an agent.

Benefits of booking with an agent:

1. Group atmosphere: If you are a solo traveller or a small party, you may prefer and
benefit from travelling as part of a group, be it for the social connection with others
or wanting company in the Haram (especially for the ladies when you are segregated
from the men in your family).

2. Hassle free: Agents will arrange most things for you, from flights, hotels, food,
transport & ziyarat etc., leaving you stress free and allowing you to focus solely on
your Ibaadah (worship).

3. First time visit: Groups will often have guides who can explain how to perform Umrah,
and they may provide beneficial kitaabs (books) too. This could be valuable if it is your
first time performing Umrah, or you are not as experienced and need guidance along
the way.

Benefits of booking without an agent:

1. Cheaper costs: Agents charge a healthy margin for their services, and so the cost of
the package is likely to be more expensive when compared to booking on your own.
You could save a substantial amount of money by booking everything yourself.

2. Duration of stay: The duration of packages is usually set for a number of days (most
commonly 10 or 14), and therefore does not provide you with the flexibility to book
your stay for as long as you desire. You can also decide whether you want to equally
split your time between Makkah and Madinah, or spend more time in one Holy city or

3
Instagram: @halaltravelblog___ Friday, 18 March 2022
Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

the other. Through booking your own trip, you can accommodate this to your own
circumstances.

3. Choice of hotels/flights: Many packages have predetermined flights and hotels. By

booking your own trip, you have the flexibility to choose all the details of your trip e.g.,
you may prefer a specific airline, plane seat, flight time, hotel etc.

4. Independence: When you are in Makkah and Madinah, you are not dependent on
others and have the flexibility to do things at your own time & pace, and based on
your own circumstances, from “Where shall we eat?” to “When should we go for
Ziyarat?” etc. These questions may seem trivial whilst you’re reading this, but it makes
all the difference when you’re there.

Section 1: Visa
Previously, the traditional (and only) route of applying for a visa to perform Umrah was
through a travel agent. However, the Saudi government opened its doors to visitors from
around the world in 2019, with its new electronic tourist visa (e-Visa) and Visa-on-Arrival
options. The Visa-on-Arrival has been suspended temporarily due to the pandemic,
therefore, currently the only option available is an electronic visa which must be purchased
online.

This e-Visa can be obtained directly from the Saudi e-Visa website
(https://visa.visitsaudi.com), and costs 480 SAR (around £100 depending on the rate). It is
inclusive of medical insurance which is mandatory for entry into Saudi Arabia.

The e-Visa is a one-year, multiple entry visa, allowing tourists to spend up to 90 days in the
country. It covers tourism-related activities and Umrah (excluding Hajj season) and excludes
other activities such as studying.

However, the tourist visa is only available for certain countries (the full list can be found on
the website). Unfortunately, it is not available for India and Pakistan, so you would still need
to apply for an Umrah visa through a travel agent if you are a citizen of those countries.

In our opinion, the e-Visa is a great alternative to the traditional route, with many benefits
which we’ve listed below:

1. Cost-effective: Travel agents were able to make a healthy mark-up on Umrah visas,
simply because you could not get a visa without them. Now, you will only be paying
‘cost price’ for the visa, with no additional charges. Having said this, travel agents still
offer to obtain your tourist visa for you, however they will charge an additional fee to
do this. This may be a good alternative if you are not comfortable with applying for
your own visa online.

2. You’re in control: The visa application process is very simple and only requires a few
details. The visa is approved and issued almost instantly, within 5 to 30 minutes. You
no longer need to wait a couple of weeks for your visa to be approved.

4
Instagram: @halaltravelblog___ Friday, 18 March 2022
Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

3. Multiple use: You can use this e-Visa multiple times within one-year, providing you
do not exceed the 90-day limit. This is an added benefit as you do not need to purchase
another visa if you are visiting again within a year of the visa being issued.

4. Exploring Saudi: The Umrah visa only allows you to visit Makkah, Madinah, and
Jeddah. With the tourist visa, you can explore more cities in the country e.g., Riyadh,
Tabuk, Ta’if etc. and extend your stay.

More details about the e-Visa can be found here: https://www.visitsaudi.com/en/about-e-

visa

Section 2: Flights
• Skyscanner and Google Flights are our preferred places to look for flights. If you’re
flexible on dates, utilise the features that allow you to compare which combination of
dates are the most cost-effective, for example select the view of ‘whole month’ to
compare which days are cheapest to travel on.

• Once you have found a potential flight, check the flight prices on the airline’s website
and compare. We would advise, where possible, to book the flight directly on the
airline’s website. This increases the likelihood of flexibility when it comes to having to
change or cancel flights, instead of having to go through a 3rd party. However, it can
be considerably cheaper booking via a 3rd party, so make sure you are aware of the
online agency’s policies too.

• When travelling from the UK, there are options for both direct and connecting flights
to Jeddah.

• There are currently no direct flights to Madinah Airport, however you can travel there
via a connecting flight.

• The easiest airport to arrive at is King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) in

Jeddah. From here, Makkah is roughly 1-hour drive, and you can also travel by train if
you prefer. Madinah is a 4-hour drive from Jeddah (or a 2-hour train journey).

Section 3: Hotels
It can feel overwhelming and complicated when looking at hotels in Makkah and Madinah, so
consider a few filters which can narrow down your search, such as your budget per night and
the location of the hotel. You might want to book a more expensive hotel which is in a
convenient location and closer to the Haram, or a more affordable hotel which is a bit further
out (8-10 min walk).

Similar to the flights, it is advisable to check the rates of the hotel via their website directly,
as well as using comparison sites such as booking.com, Agoda etc. Sometimes it is cheaper to
book directly with the hotel than it is to use a comparison website. Hotel rates will usually

5
Instagram: @halaltravelblog___ Friday, 18 March 2022
Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

state clearly whether they have breakfast and cancellation policies included, so make sure to
select the appropriate rate for your circumstances.

Majority of hotels will have a variety of room options such as twin, triple, quad etc. This should
be factored into your decision as the price of 4 people sharing a quad room is likely to be
much cheaper than the price of 4 people sharing two twin rooms.

Makkah

The 2 main areas we recommend staying in is Jabl Omar or Jabl Kaaba. Our recommendation
is based on personal experience, online research, and personal accounts from family and
friends.

Our preference is to stay in Jabl Omar, in either the Conrad, Hilton Suites or Hyatt Regency.
All 3 hotels are less than a 3-minute walk to the courtyard of the Haram. The Jabl Omar
complex is a shopping mall and has a food court upstairs which is convenient.

1. Conrad: We have stayed here over 10 times with no issues. This hotel is our personal
favourite in Makkah.
2. Hilton Suites: We have stayed here once, and the experience was pleasant. Many
family and friends have stayed here with all positive reviews.
3. Hyatt Regency: We have not stayed here ourselves, however we have heard positive
reviews from family, friends and reading reviews online.

Another popular option is the InterContinental Dar al Tawhid Makkah. It is the closest hotel
to the Haram (1-min walk); however, it is usually more expensive than other hotels due to its
prime location.

We haven’t stayed in the hotels connected to Makkah Clock Tower (Swissotel, Fairmont &
Pullman Zamzam), however we have heard that the waiting times for the lifts can be an issue,
as you are required to take 2 separate lifts to get to the Haram floor. This may be something
you want to consider if you are looking at staying here.

Jabl Kaaba is also a popular location; hotels such as Anjum, Shaza, and Sheraton are well
known options in that area. This is a longer walk than Jabl Omar, but a reliable option if you
are looking for something more cost-effective and don’t mind being a little further out (8-10
mins walk).

It is worth bearing in mind the walk from the hotel to the Masjid can be significantly longer
depending on the number of people there. The busier it is, the longer it takes to walk,
especially in peak times such as school holidays and Ramadhan.

The link below provides a good overview of the gates in Makkah. The two main gates are King
Abdul Aziz (Gate 1) and Bab al Fahad (Gate 79). Currently, the only gate that can be used for
Umrah is the Bab al- Fahad gate (Gate 79). It is restricted to Umrah pilgrims only.

Figure 1: Walking distance to the Haram from popular hotel locations

Blue: Clock Tower (2-3 mins)

Green: Jabl Omar (3-4 mins)
Orange: Jabl Kaaba (8-10 mins)

Madinah

Hotels in Madinah are considered less ‘luxurious’ than hotels in Makkah and can feel quite
outdated. A 5-star hotel is more like a 4-star, and a 4-star is more like a 3-star etc., so keep
this in mind when looking for a hotel.

In Madinah, we have only stayed in the Hilton Hotel and have had no issues, although the
hotel is dated. The location and proximity to Masjid al Nabawi is ideal (3-minute walk), and
the main entrance is on the women’s side too.

We have also heard good reviews from family who have stayed In the Oberoi Hotel (2-minute
walk), Movenpick Hotel (2-minute walk) and Frontel Al Harithia Hotel (3-minute walk).

Any hotels within the green area below are recommended, mainly due to the location. Not
only is it close to Masjid al Nabawi, but there are more food outlets, supermarkets and general
shops close by. It is also in the immediate vicinity of the women’s entrance.

Whilst there are alternative premium hotels e.g., Pullman Zamzam, Crowne Plaza etc. on the
opposite side (highlighted in yellow), it’s a fair distance (15-20 mins walk) to the main
amenities (in green), and it’s also on the opposite side of the women’s entrance too.

The link below provides a good overview of the gates in Madinah. The main entrance is from
King Fahad gate, and the most common women’s entrance is Gate 25.

Section 4: SIMs
When landing in Saudi Arabia, we would advise purchasing a local SIM at the airport. The
most popular SIMs are STC, Mobily or Zain, with the most recommended being STC due to
its competitive prices and extensive network coverage. STC prepaid SIM cards are the same
price nationwide, so you can be sure you’re not getting ripped off at the airport. We’re not
sure if this applies to Mobily and Zain too, but it’s always best to research about them all
beforehand.

Some points to note:

• There is no Wi-Fi in the Haram, but the network signal is strong

• Most hotels and shopping centres provide Wi-Fi
• WhatsApp voice or video calling doesn’t work in Saudi Arabia, but WhatsApp
messaging does. Some alternative ways to call are: FaceTime (for iPhone users only),
IMO, Tango, Line, GroupMe and Skype.

Section 5: Taxis
Avoid flagging taxis off the street. It is popular practice for taxi drivers to charge extortionate
fees, and you will have to haggle a fair amount to get a reasonable price. Our
recommendation, and a much easier option, is to download Uber or Careem, and book taxis
through them, however this does require Internet access. The cost of a taxi between Jeddah
and Makkah should be between 150-200 SAR (£30-40). Anything more than this, and it is
likely you are being overcharged.

Masjid Aishah (R.A.) is where many pilgrims go to re-enter the Miqaat to perform Umrah
again. Return taxis to Masjid Aishah (R.A.) can also be booked via Careem / Uber, but here
we would recommend flagging a taxi off the street for convenience. There are many taxis
usually waiting near Hilton Suites. Taxi fares cost around 40-60 SAR (£9-12) for a return trip.
It is not uncommon for taxi drivers to quote you 100 SAR (£20), so be sure to barter them
down.

Taxis from Jeddah to Madinah should cost around 500 – 600 SAR (£100-120).

It is worth noting that in peak times, both ‘off the street’ taxis and Uber/Careem will increase
prices accordingly.

Section 5: Trains
The main train station in Jeddah is known as the King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA)
station. It is connected to the airport which makes it very convenient, but it is quite basic and
lacks in amenities. There are no food options available, aside from a small coffee stand
offering a few snacks, so keep that in mind. The trains also only run to 5 places:

1. Makkah Station;
2. Madinah Station;
3. Jeddah Station;
4. King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC); and
5. King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA).

We have used the train to go to Madinah multiple times from Jeddah and we cannot
recommend it enough! It cost 138 SAR (£28pp) one-way (if booked in advance) and the
journey was just under 2 hours. The seats are comfortable, there’s on-board refreshments,
toilets, sockets to charge your devices and luggage racks too – essentially everything you
would normally expect and see on a train in the UK, except much better and cleaner.

The average cost of a one-way economy train journey from Makkah to Madinah is 172 SAR
(£35pp if booked in advance), and the journey takes 2 hours and 25 mins - significantly
quicker and much more comfortable than a 4-hour drive, however it may work out more
expensive if there are a few of you so keep this in mind.

All train journeys can only be booked on the official Haramain High Speed Railway website:
https://sar.hhr.sa/home#

9
Instagram: @halaltravelblog___ Friday, 18 March 2022
Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

Make sure you select ‘KAIA station’ if you are travelling to or from Jeddah. KAIA is
connected to the airport, but ‘Jeddah Station’ is in a completely different location, so don’t
book this by accident!

Note: Both Makkah and Madinah train stations are a 20-minute drive away from most hotels,
so you will still need to use a taxi to get to your location. The stations have limited taxis, and
as a result those that are outside the station charge a premium. A cheaper way around this is
to order an Uber/Careem when you are a few minutes away from arrival. This taxi should cost
around 30 - 50 SAR (£6-£10).

Section 6: Ziyarat
The average prices of Ziyarat in Makkah and Madinah is around 150 SAR (£30) for one car.
Unfortunately, we don’t have many personal recommendations that we can share, however,
most taxi drivers (off the street) usually take pilgrims for Ziyarat if requested.

We recently went for Ziyarat in Makkah with a taxi driver who was recommended by a family
friend. He is an Urdu speaking taxi driver and was knowledgeable, friendly, and allowed us to
go at our own pace. His number is +966 59 969 7281 for anyone interested.

Also, we were sent a ‘Useful contacts’ document which was compiled by orientravel.co. They
have listed out recommendations of Ziyarat services in both Makkah and Madinah which we
have attached at the end of this guide. It’s a useful document to keep to hand!

Below we have listed out places of Ziyarat in Makkah and Madinah. The list is not extensive
but provides a good starting point. Source: Al Noor Publications – The Journey of Faith: Umrah

Section 7: Food
Makkah:

There are plenty of dining options in Makkah, with two of the largest food courts in Jabl Omar
and Makkah Clock Tower. The majority of 5* hotels will have restaurants, and you can dine
in most of these, irrespective of being hotel guest or visitor.

There is also an option to have food delivered via a tiffin service in Makkah – the full list of
recommendations has been included on the document compiled by orientravel.co. and we
have attached it at the end of this guide. We recently tried food from ‘Mol. Yusuf’ from the
list and can confirm that it was delicious homemade Indian food!

Madinah:

There are a reduced number of dining options in Madinah compared to Makkah. The fast-
food options are limited (KFC, Hardees, and Al Baik being the mainstream options), however
hotels will have their own restaurants you can use. Inside Movenpick Hotel, there is a nice
café/restaurant that serves fresh pizza and shawarma which we recommend.

There is also an option to have food delivered via a tiffin service in Madinah – the full list of
recommendations has been included on the document compiled by orientravel.co. and is
attached to the end of this guide.

Section 8: Useful Applications

If you scroll to the bottom of the link below, you can see a lengthy list of applications that the
Government has recommended to use during Umrah and Hajj. It’s definitely worth a read!

https://www.my.gov.sa/wps/portal/snp/aboutksa/hajjandUmrah

Section 9: COVID-19

At the time of writing, anyone aged 12 and over MUST be double vaccinated to enter Saudi
Arabia. If it has been 8 months since the second dose of the vaccine, a booster is also
required to enter the Kingdom. If it has been under 8 months, then two doses are permitted.

The rules are slightly confusing, as currently you do not need to be vaccinated to enter the
Haram, however you DO need to be vaccinated to enter the country.

The Kingdom has been proactive in their approach in tackling COVID-19, and as a result, rules
and regulations are constantly changing. To stay up to date with the latest regulations in
Makkah and Madinah, please check the official Haramain communication channels below:

Additionally, we have shared below the essential websites or apps required in Saudi Arabia,
however as the situation is changing constantly, the information may become outdated.

Section 10: Miscellaneous Information

Debit Cards/Money Exchange:

We strongly advise using international debit cards such as Monzo, Starling and Revolut when
travelling abroad, regardless of destination. Whilst there are several benefits, we have listed
a handful below which are particularly useful in Saudi Arabia. As we use Monzo when
travelling abroad, we have listed benefits specific to them.

1. Strong exchange rate: Monzo offers a much better exchange rate than the traditional
money exchange shops dotted around Makkah and Madinah.

2. No charge on transactions: There is no additional charge when making transactions

on Monzo. Just the cost of the good/service you are purchasing.

3. ATM withdrawal: You can withdraw money at most ATMs using the Monzo exchange
rate. There is no charge for withdrawing cash up to £200 per month, with a 3% charge
thereafter. You can also use ATMs anytime, and they are more frequently located

12
Instagram: @halaltravelblog___ Friday, 18 March 2022
Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

when compared to money exchange shops that are busy, and with limited opening
hours.

Most places do accept Apple / Google Pay, and debit / credit cards, however it is best
practice to always keep some cash with you, just to be safe.

Barber shop services in Makkah:

There are several barber shops dotted around Makkah. Barbers charge between 15 – 25 SAR
(£3-£5) for services post completion of Umrah, and most only take cash. The 2 areas with
barber shops which we are familiar with are:

1. In the basement of Makkah Clock Tower; and

2. In between the Conrad and Hyatt Regency Hotel, you will find a stairway. If you climb
up the second set of stairs, you will find barber shops to your right

Supermarkets

The main supermarket in both Makkah and Madinah is Bin Dawood. They sell everything you
can think of – food, drink, daily necessities, household items etc. They also sell large empty
bottles which you can use to fill with Zamzam water and carry back with you.

In Makkah, it is located in Jabl Omar and the Clock Tower, and in Madinah, it is on the bottom
floor of Taiba Front Hotel.

Dates

Dates, in particular Ajwa, are generally cheaper and of much better quality in Madinah.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, many outlets including the Madinah Date Market have
temporarily closed.

Zamzam

Zamzam water is accessible everywhere in both Makkah and Madinah. Prior to COVID-19,
each passenger flying back to the UK was entitled to purchase one 5 litre pre-packaged drum
of Zamzam (from the airport only) as a separate checked in item, outside of the luggage
allowance. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, you are currently not allowed to do
this, therefore any Zamzam water brought back to the UK must be packed into your suitcase.

Shopping

Makkah has a larger variety of retail options when compared to Madinah, and prices are
generally similar across the two cities.

As mentioned, there is a mall inside Jabl Omar & Clock Tower,

13

Email: halaltravelblog___@outlook.com

In Madinah there is Taybah Shopping Centre. Again, due to COVID-19, many stores in
Madinah are currently closed, so you may want to consider shopping in Makkah due to the
larger variety available.

Oud & Perfumes:

There are perfume stores at every corner in Makkah and Madinah. Some of the most popular
and reputable are listed below:

• Arabian Oud
• Abdul Samad al Quraishi
• Ajmal
• Reef Perfumes – these are pop up stands in Makkah, located in Jabl Omar and inside
Makkah Clock Tower
