Leonor Orosa Goquingco was a Filipino national artist in creative dance, who was also known

for breaking tradition within dance. She played the piano, drew art, designed scenery and
costumes, sculpted, acted, directed, danced and choreographed. March 27, 1976 Leonor

field of Filipino culture. A Dancer, Choreographer, and a Writer Leonor Orosa-Goquingco
was born on June 24, 1917 in Jolo, Sulu. Leonor studied Elementary And High School in
schools in different provinces for College, Leonor started in the Philippines Woman College
She finished her studies at St. Scholatica's College, she graduated with a B.S. Education As
Simma Cum Laude but she chose a different career. Painting, Playing the Piano, Writing
Poetry. Besides being a brilliant student, Leonor is full of talent and efficiency. In her youth
she excelled as a dancer and choreographer. whatever she wants to learn enter she claims it
with full skill. She went under Lilia Lopez (Mrs. Frank Jison) in Iloilo. Vinta (1938) which was
performed and danced by t students of the college. Her Circling the Globe (1939) is her first
performance as a choreographer in St. Scholatica's. In 1940 Leonor Orosa built her Valley's
own studio in Manila. The Philippine Ballet Theater and Dance Repertory. In the United
States the Orosa sisters studied again, Leonor took a Music Course at Columbia University,
New York Even in other countries, Leonor is a brilliant student where she is always invited to
perform and It was also here that she met Benjamin Goquingco, her future husband. and
when she returned to the Philippines she reopened her Studio Valley in Manila, While She
was teaching drama at PWU and nag choreographer in other major performances. Over the
years there have been many memorable performances the offering of Leonor Orosa-
Goquingco as a dancer and choreographer on different stages. from home country even in
other countries, her unique vision and skill as a choreographer made progress in the style of
many traditional Philippine dances and gave innovation to the form of presentation. Mother
of Philippine Theater Dance and Dean of Filipino Performing Arts Critics is national artist
Leonor Orosa-Goquingco is a true genius who not only paved the way for the further
development of Filipino dance but also a true disciple of culture with a deep love for her art
and love for her hometown.
